Yup I had her wrapped in a towel between my knees. With what they gave me though I wouldn't be able to hold her mouth open and keep the syringe and tube together. She'll only drink out of the pool and a small bucket of water with apple cider vinegar and garlic overnight. She won't drink from the bucket except at night. I've tried water from a dish and she won't
I'll still try tomorrow though. She won't take any water really from me or if I'm around. She's also not inclined to drink if the other ducks aren't around, unless from her pool, they'd knock a dish over easily and probably end up drinking it on her.
I'm praying. It's so sad when they're not feeling well and then you gotta manhandle/make them even more uncomfortable in order to help them feel better, hoping what you're doing is the right thing. Even what the vet diagnosed was just a guess. I don't feel great about giving antibiotics without actually knowing what the issue is. They tried to do a stool sample to test for parasites but there wasn't enough to get a good one and those tests can take days, so they would've most likely had her start the antibiotics as a precaution anyway. Last time I had a duck tested for parasites it was days after he passed that I got the results after asking if they had them yet, and it was negative. They also saw in the records that I've fed recovery to my ducks in the past (one of them actually but it was probably in the others file to give if needed) so they didn't go over how to use what they gave me. In the past though I was told to use a large syringe they gave me, not a tube but must be they wrote tube feed in the file. I don't really find it odd that they didn't go over how to use the tube when they had it in the records that I've given recovery before (and I knew there were plenty of explanations online, and I've watched very detailed ones) but I felt it odd they didn't tell me how much to give her for her weight. She's much smaller than the drake I had to feed with a syringe. I guess I find it odd that they don't make certain that you know exactly what you need to do and how much to give, especially when often times in the moment you don't think of certain things to ask (especially when you have your kids with you lol) and then can't always reach them when you need to later. So when it was time to give it to her I thought, oh shoot, they never said how much to give her and it wasn't on her discharge papers. So I figured I'd just give her what was recommended for my pekin girl if she had needed it when she was about the same age, which was 25ml. She seems a bit smaller though, so I gave 20ml.
Ok thanks! I'm not exactly sure what the side effects would be or how long it would take for them to show. It's hard when pets get sick when you've got a lot going on, I get tired and scatterbrained and make mistakes. Stinks too when it happens when a vet isn't available. There used to be an ER vet who took poultry but just stopped so no one to call on the weekend.
