(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
Yes, we are new to the experience of having ducks/goose. June 10, 2022 and June 13, 2022 are the birthdays.
(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
Our seven ducks (Stevie, Chuckles, Brownie, Yolkie, Larry, Curly, & Moe) were born on June 10. Three days later, another egg hatched! He/she was bigger than the rest and yellow (the others were brown when born) so we named him/her Big Bird. Big Bird, it turned out, is a goose.
(3) What breeds do you have?
We are still unsure, but we believe the ducks may be Swedish Black/Blue (Stevie and Chuckles, mostly), Rouen (Larry, Curly, & Moe), and/or Khaki Campbells (Brownie & Yolkie). For Big Bird, we are also unsure, but he/she may be a Toulouse, Greylag, or American Buff. We are unsure of the genders of all of our ducklings/gosling. Although, we are starting to see/hear some differences and may be able to tell better soon.
(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens?
They are so funny, especially Big Bird. In our too often chaotic world, it is calming to watch them and hang with them.
(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
Cooking plant-based meals, DIY projects around the house, amateur gardening, volunteering with various causes, and organ, tissue & eye donation.
(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.
My partner, Jeremy, and I have two dogs. Isabella (rescued Siberian Husky & Greyhound mix) and Sugar (rescued Sheltie) are adorable and get along well thus far with our new duck/goose family. Currently, we are both attaining degrees in Graduate or Law school, so the ducks/goose are adorable distractions.
(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community?
I stumbled upon the BYC community when researching how to care for, house, and feed our new family members and it has been very helpful. I decided to finally join so I could ask questions, comment, and share our experiences.
