I've got some duck eggs that are 28 days today, they all have their air sack, but one is tapping in the shell

Do they pop their air sack before they hatch? And the one that's tapping how long do you thing I've got left?

Hopefully you've got an adorable duckling by now, but to answer your question:
Yes, they do break into the air cell before they crack into the shell. Lack of oxygen inside the eggs is actually what starts the hatching process. They pip into the air cell and start breathing. The tapping is the duckling working on cracking the shell. They repeatedly peck one spot until it breaks. After they've pipped, it can take them anywhere from 24-48 hours to make their way out. During that time, they'll absorb all of the blood in the veins in the membrane of the egg and their yolk sac (which they can live off of for up to 3 days!).

Best of luck to you, happy hatching!

The first one hatched with this on it? Any suggestions? I've just left it in the incubator

That's normal "egg gunk", don't worry. It will detach from the duckling's navel by itself soon. Don't pull on it, as it may cause bleeding. Congrats on the hatch!

Can I ask how long the external pipping can take. My duck started tapping around 13 hours ago and is still going.

(I’m sorry, I realize this response is months late but I’m going to respond anyway)

The internal pipping can take up to 12 hours. If you have been hearing chirps and/or taps and haven’t seen a crack in the egg after the 12 hour mark it is recommended to make a small pip for them and let them work their way out.

The actual unzipping process can take over 48 hours and the little bebs should remain in the incubator until they’ve had an opportunity to dry out and absorb all the remaining nutrients from their egg!
