Duck Tragedy

So we had 3 ducks (about 2 weeks old now) and we have been keeping them away from our lab for obvious reasons. However, he found them over night and killed two of them. It was not vicious and he didn’t eat them, there was no blood I think he was just playing with them and got carried away. Anyway, we want to do what is best for the remaining one and I didn’t know if it would be better to get it some more friends or if he should be released into a pond that already has ducks? I feel awful about the whole situation we want to do what is best. Thanks!

Sorry for your losses!

I think your best bet would be to get the little guy some friends around his age, letting him out into your pond that young is just a disaster waiting to happen. In the meantime to keep him company you can set a mirror and a stuffed toy in his pen to keep him company. Best of luck!

Thank you for your help and kind words everyone! We went and got him some more friends today and he seems to be doing MUCH better. They’re already 3 peas in a pod. Y’all are awesome, I’m so glad I posted in this forum.

I'm on my second generation of Pekin ducks. I have two older ones outside, and my four new girls are currently being raised inside the house in a Pack-N-Play with a heat lamp.
Ducks are extremely social animals, and thrive best when they have at least one other. If one of your ducks is a boy, then they will need at least 2-3 females (hence why I had to order some girls)
If they are domesticated, you absolutely CAN NOT dump them in a pond, they don't know how to survive. They are flightless and can upset the ecosystem of migrating wild ducks.
If you find you cannot care for your duck, join a pet duck and goose group on Facebook, and connect with others that can help you out.

Be careful with your dog! I have 4 and had to learn a very hard lesson years ago the peeping brings out the prey drive.
