At least don't do what I did, the "pool" is too big for me to do much with, so I run water to it morning and night while I do chores, so that most of the debris gets flushed out. During heavy rain it can get muddy. But then I forgot to turn off the water one night. The ducks love it, but I've been wading through ankle deep mud ever since. Nothing green can survive when saturated enough for ducks to go digging. They free range, so they're not stuck with only mud.
