One of my mallards has this gunk in both her eyes.Other than that she's eating & going about her ducky business as usual. She free ranges & has lots of Flock Raisier & fresh water. What causes that to happen? I'm clueless.
What can I do to make her better? I have some Vetropolycin (eye ointment) that I had used for one of my dogs, if that would be okay???

Thanks,Miriam

Does she have deep enough water to dunk her head? I would start with that. Maybe you can spray her with the hose and wash off her eyes that way, too. My ducks love to be "watered".

Then maybe you can look in her eyes, like the lower lid and see if it seems inflamed. Then I would try some antibiotic eye ointment. I use Terramycin eye ointment when I need to.
Can you post a pic or 2?

Hi Terrie,
I have alot of water buckets around the yard for them to dunk their heads in & 3 swimming pools.
The gunk forms in the front of her eye.It hasn't covered her eyes completely. She shakes her head & has been rubbing the gunk off.
She's got a bad habit of flying off down to the bayou,so maybe she got this from there?
I tired several times to get a decent pic, she's not as tame as her mother. I don't have anyone here to help me out.
I think I do have some Terramycin eye ointment, how many times do you apply it?
Thank you so much,Terrie

I put some ointment on her eyes last night.I did it again this morning to find a white sty looking thing above her right eye.She does have redness around her eyeball.
I'll continue the treatment till she gets better.
Thank you for your help,Terrie

I would wash her eye and put the ointment in twice a day at first. She is going to be in the water so it will wash off. When I treat an eye, after I rinse it with saline, I put the ointment on. the inner eyelid will come over so I wait until it retracts and kind of gently work the ointment under the eyelid. Hard to describe, like making a cup of the lower lid and making sure the ointment is in there to work best.

I would keep her penned so she can't get to the bayou until here eye is cleared up.

Yes, they are masters at the art of pinching and gmming you until you bleed almost. I can usually spot a duck owner by looking at their arms. Little half moon bruises give us away.
