1) What type of bird , age and weight.
Cayuga, Male, 10 months old. Weight 6lbs.
2) What is the behavior, exactly.
Noticed he was sitting down alot, not grazing with the other ducks as much. Just general "not Sam" behavior.
3) Is there any bleeding, injury, broken bones or other sign of trauma. -
Discovered a wound, quarter sized on his breast, abrasions on the edges of his wings, abrasion beneath his eye. No broken bones, no active bleeding. Possibly happened a couple of days ago and I missed it because it's all covered with feathers.
4) What happened, if anything that you know of, that may have caused the situation.
-No idea. Anything from dog attack to rat attack. Maybe a opossum but doubtful.
5) What has the bird been eating and drinking, if at all.
-Mazuri waterfowl diet. Water. Added electrolytes to his water today and got some antibiotics into him. He is both eating and drinking well.
6) How does the poop look?
Seems to be normal. Dark green, semi solid.
7) What has been the treatment you have administered so far?
Cleaned all wounds with betadine and packed with neosporin. Adminstered doxycycline via food and water. Gave electrolytes.
8 ) What is your intent as far as treatment?
Prefer to avoid vet bills if possible but will attend one if I can't treat myself.
9) If you have a picture of the wound or condition, please post it. It may help. -Sorry no picture of it. He won't hold still for me to get a shot.
10) Describe the housing/bedding in use- Currently he's inside in a large rubbermaid container on straw.
Sam seems to be ok. His eyes are clear, good pupillary response and his breathing is not affected. He is drinking water and eating on his own but little bits at a time. His wings do work and are not broken but he seems as though he has very little energy. I cleaned out the wound on his chest and there was a big puss plug in it that I removed. I've packed the hole with neosporin. Anything else I need to do?
