Hi all,

I’m a newish Duck parent. My flock is approaching one year old. I have a Khaki, Autumn, who appears to have in infection in her toe. It’s not bumblefoot and I’m confident it’s osteomyelitis. I can’t visit the vet because of social distancing, but she is on doxycycline and meloxicam.

Has anybody here had success treating osteomyelitis without amputation? I’m comfortable treating her for as long as it takes to clear the infection, but am hoping to hear some success stories.

Thank you!

In the picture of the bottom of her foot.. it looks reddish from iodine because I originally started treating her for bumble.

Thanks for the reply!

Looks like bumble to me too. Not all bumble presents it self with a blk scab my Runners didn't. Antibiotics and Meloxicam can help but your going to have to eventually get that infection out of there. How long has she been on the meds?

That's not to say it won't spread to the bone and blood that is why we have to get the infection out. It's like it walls itself off and the meds can't actually hit it. My Runner was on antibiotic and meloxican for 7 days before I went in and got the bumble out then she finished up her meds,.

She has been on meds for 4 days.

I don’t mind doing a little surgery if it is bumblefoot, but I don’t like not seeing the scab and whatnot. I’ll probably end up taking her in and the vet will no doubt want to do an X-ray.

Thank you all for your replies

I know this is a old post, but I have a pekin whom had oestymititis. I took him to vet during this covid outbreak. Anyway, I successfully treated it but unfortanelty my dearest pekin will never be able to walk normal. You should go to the vet immediately, this is a life threatening disease.

Thanks for sharing, but sorry to hear about your duck.

Just curious, what antibiotics was he put on?

SMS Suspension, Gentamycin, and DMSO. He can run, swim, walk. He just gets around a little slower.but he us infection free.
