Well, I did it! I set up a "farm stand" outside my gate. Put a cooler full of 1/2 doz cartons of duck eggs and a coin box. Advertised it on the community forum. First customer showed up today.
We have "honour" stands all over the island so I figured I might as well join in. The eggs that haven't sold by Monday night go to the food bank on Tuesday.

The farm where my 2 white runners went has a stand in a shed that's almost like a little store! Eggs, flowers, veggies, herbs and meat. It's way down the driveway from the main house, nobody was in evidence when I went there. Just a price list and posters indicating which freezers had which meat, etc.
Maybe they have a video camera, I don't know because it never occurred to me to look for one. With my measly offering of eggs I wouldn't consider it. Besides, I have a Jack Russell cross who barks at anyone daring to be nearby. Good security system!

In the Real Estate office where I work, there is an older fellow, who is one of the finest people I have ever had the blessing of getting to know. He told me when he and his wife was still on the farm, they had a little refrigerator down at the end of the lane, full of eggs in cartons, of course

, and on the honor system. He said they never had anyone not pay, and he didn't know if he could do that now, where we all live . . .but its nice to hear someone else can. We have an honor vegetable stand up the street from us, and I think they do real well too. But, the guy is a brute and I sure wouldn't want to antagonize him by taking a zuke!!!!!!

When I lived in western NY we had a honor stand for eggs and fresh veggies. Cash out was a jar with a limited amount of small bills and change, a pad of paper and a pen. Never lost any cash, most IOUs were honored sooner or later. BUT THE DARN PEN WOULD COME UP MISSING EVERY DAY until we got smart and tied it down! I do the the same thing myself, finish using the pen and automatically stick it in my pocket. I am not a crook!
Here in the South we would do the same thing but there is no way to keep things fresh in weather that starts at 80 and gets to 95-105. The cost of ice just makes it unprofitable unless we charge more than the stores do. There are almost no roadside stands here and we miss crops that we don't grow ourselves. Farmer markets just aren't the same type of thing.
