My 2 1/2 week pekin duckling got attacked by our small dog. I was right there and pulled the dog off the duck. The duck was only in the dog's mouth for a second. I can't see any external damage on the duckling. He only lost a few feathers.

I am worried about there being internal injuries. What should I watch for? When should I worry. So far s/he is eating and drinking normally.

Thanks in advance for any advice!

Sounds like he might be doing ok. You'd want to be looking out for changes in appetite or drinking as well as any serious lethargy. So if he's already eating and drinking just fine there probably isn't much to worry about.

After locating him to a safer location, I examined him further and found a puncture wound on his back. I cleaned it up good. I isolated him from his friend, but it caused him great distress. He kept trying to jump to get to the other duck. He was peeping loudly. He is having a hard time grooming his back end. He had a hard time balancing and is more clumsy than usual. I put him back with the other duck and both seem a lot happier.

What should I do to address the puncture wound more? Do I need to try to cover it? Should I be putting neosporin on it? After I cleaned it good, the other duckling became interested in the wound. I know it's going to be a long night for me worrying about my little Einstein.

Thanks for any advice!!!!!

My dogs attacked my ducks and killed 7 of them it was devastating. There were 9 others that survived and 5 that had some serious wounds. I cleaned them and everyday put medicine on their wounds. I kept them outside and together and they are all healed now. You should definitely leave it with its friend and make sure the wound is clean and the neosporin would be fine. It should heal and be good as new! My ducks had deep chunks bit out of their back and they are well and wonderful. I wish you and your ducklings well!

My dogs attacked my ducks and killed 7 and out of the 9 others 5 of them had deep chunks out of their back. I cleaned their wounds and put some Blu-Kote spray that I got at a feed store everyday. I left them outside together and now they are all well and wonderful. Just make sure the wound is clean and neosporin should be fine. If it is a small puncture wound and is clean you probably don't need to put anything on it. Don't use anykind of bandaid or wrapping. Definitely keep it with its friend and keep them warm. It should heal up fine. I wish you and your ducklings well!
