Today during my early morning duckling check, I discovered that Mae, one of my almost 5-week-old Pekin ducklings, had passed away during the night. She seemed absolutely fine yesterday and when I put them to bed last night. I’m absolutely heartbroken and trying to figure out what could have happened, and how I can prevent it from happening to my remaining 3.

I found her with her legs and neck outstretched, and she was on her back. She was still warm when I found her, but the others had been cuddling around her so it may have been from their body hea

She had been panting a little on and off, but they all had at some point. I found that it seemed to start when the temperature hit above 70 degrees in their brooder, and they stopped panting after I put a fan nearby to cool the space.

Before bed, I had cleaned the brooder, filled the water and food dishes, and turned out the lights. They haven’t had the Brinsea in the brooder for the last week because they seemed to have outgrown it. When I found her this morning, the food dish was almost empty (except for some remaining brewer’s yeast that had fallen to the bottom), one water dish was empty (and had been pooped in), and the other waterer (a gallon water container with a hole cut in the side) was low but still about 1/3 full. I’d recently removed a third water dish because it was rather shallow and seemed to serve no purpose other than to get knocked over and wet the bedding.

Could she have choked on the food perhaps? Any ideas on what could have happened to my sweet girl?

I’m sorry for your loss as well. Our lovely ducks are precious, but sometimes just not very stable. From what you’ve said, nothing was your fault. Lots of water is always essential when offered with food for ducks.

some people don’t have feed or water in the house at night to avoid mess, but I prefer to have food in the duck house at night, and I have 2 3-gallon feeder bowls of water atop a deep plastic pan to help prevent really wet straw. (They still mess it all up every night, but none goes thirsty). I have 11 ducks.

Thank you so much. I’ve always been diligent about making sure they have water, but I’m not sure if she realized there was water still in the jug or not. Or if she’d have been able to find it at night? I don’t know...I’ve been wracking my brain to try to figure out what happened.

The food that was left in the food bowl was kind of powdery, plus the brewers yeast. I’m thinking maybe she got a big gulp of that powdery mixture and it blocked her throat. I put them to bed last night with no food in the brooder for the first time, but I left the water dishes and added the third one back in.

Ive also removed the pine shavings. I don’t know if they could have caused a problem (they did all peck at/eat them pretty often). Even though I’ve been cleaning the brooder 3+ times a day, it still seemed like the shavings were holding more moisture and creating more of a smell. I’m just going with a few towels/old tshirts now and hoping that works better. I’d had them on top of the shavings anyway so I thought this might be a safer option.

I just want so badly for them to be happy, healthy, and thriving. They seem to be pretty delicate little things after all. Not at all like our hardy bull-headed chickens!

I just looked up this thread because my duckling died yesterday, a Muscovy. Happy healthy, then suddenly dead.
I had her in with a few chicks, and I was putting nutritional yeast on the food. Inside, warm, food and water.
