It is really hard for me to write this right now. :( My one and only duckling was a rescue from the park. It was a little Rouen duckling that had a broken leg. I brought it home several weeks ago and fixed up its leg and it had been doing fine until today. It had been living with my new batch of chicks around the same age after it was healed up. Anyway, the chicks were out free ranging this morning and the duckling was hanging out in the coop. She stayed in there for a while and drank water and ate food perfectly normally. She then went out for a morning swim. When she was done, she went back into her coop (she isn't very fond of being out in open areas so she doesn't free range too much). I was out cleaning the pool about an hour ago and I heard a lot of banging around coming from inside the coop. So I peeked in and the duckling looked like it was dust bathing like a chicken. Then it started to try to move away and I thought its leg was broken again until it completely turned over on it's back and flung it's head back. It started to spin in circles and freak out so I reached to grab her and she calmed down, but died in my hands a few seconds after. She went stiff almost immediately. I'm so crushed by this right now, I just lost another bird to a dog yesterday. :hit
Does anybody know what happened to my little Moe? Should I be worried about the chicks that are in the same coop? I'm just trying to figure out what just happened. I'm still processing everything-it happened so fast. She has never had any sort of problem before this (except for the broken leg). She was perfectly healthy and normal even today. Sorry for all the writing too, I know I'm kinda rambling on but I'm still just so baffled by this and I haven't gotten over my bird that was killed yesterday either. :hit

I'm so sorry for your loss, sweetie...I can't even imagine how hard it must have been to see the little guy die in your hands. At least you were there for him in the end. :/

It could be any number of things, unfortunately. He could have been born with a brain disorder and had been abandoned by his biological mom. It could have been something he ate, a lot of toxic plants can cause seizures and death in an assortment of animals. It could even had been a blood infection from his broken leg.

One thing I don't think it was is a nutritional deficiency. I mean anything's possible, chicks and ducklings do have different dietary needs, but you would have seen symptoms long before something this severe ever manifested.

P.S. I really hope you got hold of that dog. I'd never forgive the neighbor that let their animal maul or kill one of my birds.
