What can I do to help with some minor leg injuries. Some cuts and a bit of skin missing. I posted about this in the emergencies thread but had no response. Basically I am an idiot and didn't take my ducklings leg bands off when they arrived. They obviously didn't grow with the duck and I took them off yesterday. It injured their legs but they're walking and, well, running like satan is after them everytime they see me. Still, I feel like I should do something to keep them from getting infected.

Rinse it out with some Hydrogen peroxide a few times a day and apply a little bit of neosporin on the wound a few times a day as well. If you can keep it covered with a bandage, that would aid in the healing process as well. Just keep an eye on it to make sure it doesn't get any worse.

I would go along with the rinse and antibiotic ointment idea, though I do prefer to use saline since I feel that beyond an initial H2O2 rinse to clean out, the saline does less tissue damage over time and interferes less with tissue regrowth.

And warm baths before the rinse and ointment most likely will help, moistening the skin and increasing blood circulation.

Thank you. I'll do that.

I put them in an ice water bath directly after the removal. I hope that didn't do more harm than good. I thought it would help numb them and help with the swelling and bleeding.

I haven't heard of cold water as a treatment . . . . I can see your point, just don't know whether any negatives might outweigh positives. I am thinking of reduced blood circulation. See how the little patient responds. Hang in there!
