Duckling on deaths door

What was it doing when you found it? Not clear from your first post.
It was simply laying there like I found Lil’ Jo Jo dead last Thursday. Completely unresponsive even with a little rubbing stimulation I wasn’t even sure at a moment or two if it was alive and was just begging for it to hold on.
I am feeding DUMOR chick starter at 20% But also supplementing a little scrambled eggs a little Kale salad And I do add niacin in the form of nutritional yeast from my co-op even though DUMOR says they have niacin in the food. I do only have one heat lamp right now approximately 2 1/2 feet above their heads in there is an area away from the heat lamp but I’m cleaning their pen so frequently and getting them what I am wondering if they don’t have a chance to dry out because I’m trying to keep them so clean .. This duckling I did find lying felt cool. And right now it’s opening and shutting its mouth constantly as it’s kind of swimming in 5 inch deep water
GETTING them WET is what it should have said (Every

Hmmm. feed sounds good, Sounds like you love em! Have you raised the lamp as they get older for less heat?

And bathing is best done once a day. Bath then straight to the lamp for drying and preening

Best thing todo is put a thermometer under the lamp so you can keep an eye on it more closely altho they regulate themselfs by getting closer or futher. Usualy.
And make sure when you put them in water it's nice and warm and you get them out before it starts cooling down so they don't chill. How's your duckling this morning? @PheasantCreekFarm
It made it through the night- ✅’d at 3:00 am too-alert somewhat, But more so sitting. And then I bathed it and watched it eat- it barely ate and I had another duckling that it spent the night with that seemed problematic so I’m taking care of that one and then I went back to check on the duckling that almost died and it was in almost the same unresponsive condition that it was last night when I found it so I put it in a warm bath and revived it and now I am sitting with it by the heater along with the other one that it spent the night with and I have a little dish of peas in front of it and it just seems like maybe it is just cold for some reason although it’s inside my house In the den which is the lowest level but I’m almost seeing a niacin deficiency in the friend that was together overnight with the duckling the almost died. I think my biggest problem is that I just can’t stand to see these ducklings have dirtiness. So if one uses the bathroom I have to immediately clean that spot and I’ve been using a lot of water and I think maybe they just haven’t dried out completely so I really have to give them tender loving care -Perfect way to spend a Valentines day. ❤️

pop the thermometer off your house and stick in
You need 85ish degrees for them

Without heat they wont develope rught

Are you keeping them in water a lot? ducklings/ducks are messy just keep their bedding dry as possible but don't keep getting them wet.
I know I’m definitely failing here. No sooner do I clean their area & another one goes to the bathroom. I bathed them before they ate this morning..And now again just gave him another bath so that there are very nice and warm and then they were actually showing signs that they were too warm so I had their brooder clean and fresh..and moved them back. The two that I am providing extra TLC both have diapers on and are next to the little heater and just sitting perfectly content.

They should have 1 bath a day then completly dry at the lamp, Theyd be fine for a day without a bath at all

85 degrees in the brooder

Ducks are fine on their own poop for a day or two. They are the pigs of the bird world

Its gonna poop in its food in its water on you on its brother. Mine poop in their water then mate in it THEN drink it

I do not have ducks. But do they HAVE to be in water? I would think that’s doing more harm than good. Babies need to regulate body heat. I would think that the extra exertion of being in the water is exhausting valuable energy.

Ducklings get soaked and cold VERY easily, even in warm weather. They probably shouldn’t have more than one bath a day, and not any longer than 10 minutes. If they start getting soaked and not floating so high in the water, it’s time to take them out. That’s what real mothers do. They never let their babies stay too long, and I’ve never seen them make their babies bathe more than once a day.

Poop and being in poop is normal for ducks. They are not like puppies or kittens where you need to clean up after them constantly. I am encouraging you to relax your cleanliness standards because the frequent cleaning and bathing may be making things worse. Ducklings are routinely reared outside by mother ducks who don’t wash them every time they poop. The oils in their skin and feathers are an important part of their natural protections and washing them off too frequently can strip them of those protections, while also lowering their body temperatures at a time when they are developmentally unable to maintain an adequate body temperature on their own.

This was counterintuitive for me, too, because as a mom, I show my love and care by keeping my kids clean and our home clean. But ducklings’ needs are different. They need warmth and the ability to move themselves closer and farther away from the heat source, since they can’t regulate that internally until they are fully feathered. That’s why it is common practice to move the heat source a little farther away each week as the ducklings grow feathers over their down, lowering the temperature by about five degrees each week until you reach the ambient temperature and the duckling have the full insulation of feathers.

Just as we feel cold after exiting the shower or if we end up in wet clothes because we are losing the heat necessary to evaporate water from our skin, ducklings have to use body heat to dry their wet down. Doing this over and over makes it extra hard for them to regulate their body temperature.

When I understood their particular needs better, I got more comfortable with cleaning the brooder daily instead of constantly, giving just one bathing opportunity per day, and focusing on having a heat source that allowed my ducklings to choose how warm they needed to be.

I hope this helps.
