Duckling Watch 2k17!

Hello friends! I hope I'm doing everything right -- let me know if not. I've been reading these forums for several years now, and decided to finally break the silence because... I'm waiting on my new ducklings to arrive in just a few days!

I'm so ready for the mess, the noise, the smell, all of it! The birds I'm receiving (I'm expecting them somewhere along the 10th of this month) will be the start of the first flock I've raised and managed on my own as an adult. And I can't handle the suspense by myself!

Welcome to Backyard Chickens! How exciting this must be for you! we just picked up 10 ducklings from our post office that we ordered today. This is our second year raising ducks. We just started out with khakis. But now we have Welshes, Buffs, Khakis, Rouens, and Cayugas! We plan on building a large duck coo for them, Do you mind sharing any pics or descriptions about your duck coop?

I don't currently have a duck coop, since I've never encountered any predators trying to bother my animals around here, but I do have plans for one. I have two storage buildings in the back yard, one of which I'm thinking about either converting into a coop or potentially tearing down and building a smaller coop in its place. I'll be sure to post here if I have any updates!

Sounds Great, We have a khaki campbell breeding pair that never eats any of the grain we leave out for them, And they never go into our chicken coop. Instead at night the find a place to chill out in our barn which is pretty cool. Also mind me asking what breeds you are getting? Would love updates on how things are going for you.

I'm getting Welsh and black Swedish to start off with! I have a few other breeds in mind that I'm interested in, and I would love to eventually have geese as well. Not sure where / if I'll find my stopping point now.

Do your Campbells fly? They were on my shortlist when I was choosing my ducks, but I turned them down after reading they're potentially capable of flight. I love the breed but don't want to risk escapees until I can have a coop with a decently sized run attached.

And yes, I'll be sure to post updates! If all goes well I should have my ducklings settled into their brooder in 8 days!

If i try to catch them they will wave their wing to try and fly. But they dont get off the ground much more than a foot. They're a flighty breed thats for sure, But we didnt really spend much time with them when we first got em'. But now we have a clutch of 5 who are much more friendly then the adults.
