Hi!

I have a baby mallard that will be five weeks tomorrow. This is our first time taking care of a duck and I am constantly worried that he/she (called Igor) is doing okay.
I feel like Igor has grown maybe a bit too fast and the wing feathers have now started to grow. The left wing is doing just fine and is neatly tucked in, but the right one (which has grown a bit faster) is hanging down. Igor can pick it up, but it drops immediately.
I am super worried that he/she is developing angel wings or that this will be a permanent problem. What do you think? Is it just too heavy right now?

Igor has been on starter feed with 20% protein for 4 weeks and is now on 15%.

I’ve attached photos of what the wing looks like. I am super helpful for any advice I can get!

Hello, and Welcome to BYC!

Dropping of the wings is common with ducks that are just starting to get their pin feathers in, they're full of blood and can be quite heavy, that's most likely the reason her wing is drooping a bit, after a few weeks she should regain strength in her wing muscle once again.

Thank you, it feels like a great forum to be in!
That’s such a relief to hear! I’ll just have to be patient and wait then.
Thank you for your help!

I agree with Issac, the rest time I saw this I freaked out too. I have only had one case of Angel wing and it's unmistakeable. This is just blood fearthers. I don't know why but it's common for mine to only do this one wing at a time.

That’s so good to read! Yes, the fact that it was just one wing made me nervous, it made it feel a little bit more strange. It’ nice to read that it seems normal, from someone who has been through this before!

I’ve mainly noticed this with my Muscovy drakes they must have super heavy wings and poor things have to work constantly to keep them in the right position when those flight feathers are growing in.

Yes, they grow so fast! No wonder they can get tired keeping up with all those new feathers!
