Ducklings and Heat

Quick question...

My ducklings are all acting normally but when it's time to sleep they all huddle together as far away from the heat lamp as possible. In their new brooder under the lamp the temp is 90 degrees. Four feet away, on the other side (the cool side), it's 74 degrees. The ducks aren't panting so I don't think they're too hot. But when ducklings huddle together tightly doesn't that mean they are cold? Why then wouldn't they just move closer to the lamp to get warmer?

Welcome!

In my experience, it is tough to figure out what a duckling is thinking or why they do something. How old are yours?

I found mine did not read the book, so they don't do things the way "ducks always do."

But the books have been very, very helpful, as have BYC Duck Forum folk.
