Ducklings first bath....(pics)

beakkeeper- Nettie here on BYC offered them for free!! She had a minimum to order from Ideal and these were her strait run. She is a true sweetheart that LOVES her ducks but didn't have room for more.

shelleyd2008- Yes, indeed they are messy! Always wanting to play in their water! I find the cayugas and the swedish to be very skiddish. And the first couple days they did spit up but this has seemed to gradually ceased.

I've handled these particular cayugas and didn't have a problem... My ducklings did this two for about the first two days, then they stopped when they got used to being picked up.

oh and claudia! thanks for the pics! how cute! Mine are eagerily waiting their one week birthday before their first bath... lol. I'm kinda spastic and worry-wortish with new babies since i've lost one before (after 5 or 6 days). Mine have gotten to go into other rooms of the house though, i set up a small clear plastic container with a light, food, water (btw, i was able to teach them to drink out of a hanging water bottle!, like the kind they use for gerbils and hamsters, it keeps the water off the ground! plus they like playing with it) downstairs in the frontroom, so the baby duckies are with us where ever we are in the house.

You should see my big ducks, they are totally jealous. Whenever i talk to the babies Victor comes by me and starts talkling. I go to pet him or pick him up and he'll walk away to go by ming mei... but as soon as i talk to the babies again, he's right back there talking. lol... they are soo jealous.

I wouldn't give up one those more skittish four.... The more you pick them up and hold them and talk to them, the nicer they get. Even if they squiggle endlessly and peep super loudly. I first i was picking up sammy and peter a lot more than David because he's scared he going to hurt them... They would sit nicely for me after getting used to me but would freak out if David picked them up... Now that they are getting used to him they freak out less often. With baby ducks, it's a matter of persistance. If you have the time to devote to them and "make" them like you, they will... lol.

Ming Mei hated being picked up when we got her, from the first day! She'd try with every bit of energy she had to jump out of your hands. Even through her feathering and afer her first molt, she continued to kick verociously when you picked her up. Then one day about a month ago, she just stopped. I only pick her up while she's facing me and she just looks at me, lol.
If i put her to my stomach/chest, she'll rest her head on my shoulder and give me a hug. It's all persistance. lol
