Hello, I have a few questions. I will have had my ducklings for 3 weeks this weekend. I read up on everything etc. I also got 5 chicks at the same time (tractor supply and the more I read the more I realize I shouldn’t listen to people at the store). I gave all the birds the same medicated formula for the first week and a half (which I see now wasn’t needed for the ducks) than I got them Purina layena crumbles (which our popular local barn/animal feed store told me was good to get and now I’m seeing other wise) the ducks are doing what seem to be fine, but today i am going to buy Purina duck feed pellets, because I am starting to notice them go bow legged, when I purchased them they were on the same food I got them originally, but I just assumed the food contained what they needed (never assume) now I know they need niacin in their food or water, am I too late to start this? Because I am hoping I am not. The ducklings have become my best friends and I would hate to know that I messed up their life because of this.

Layena Pellets are not suitable for ducklings, way too much calcium and not enough Niacin, I highly suggest you get the Duck Raiser Pellets which are great for ducklings and ducks. Since they are starting to become bow-legged, pick up some Durvet Cattle B injectable, It is available at most feed stores. It's labeled as an injectable, but we administer it orally or over treats, for each duckling, you will want to go 1ml a day for each duckling until symptoms improve, along with feeding them a correct diet your duckling should be walking better in no time.........Also welcome to BYC!

Thank you! I’m hoping so I am going to call the local feed store as soon as they open so I can hurry over and get what I need. I don’t want to cause further damage to them, but hoping I can correct it for them. I appreciate your help! We had a injured duckling when I was young my aunt raised but that’s was forever ago, and it seems now a lot of people only have slight knowledge, and I was not fully prepared to get ducks but I couldn’t say no 🤦🏻‍♀️ And some websites say different than others and it gets a little confusing. But I want to make sure they are taken care of properly.

We see a lot of B3 deficient ducklings on here, especially heavy-weight breeds like Pekins since they grow so fast and put a lot of weight in a short matter of time, they seem to have a higher niacin intake than other breeds. It partially depends how long they've had it before it's corrected, for example, some day-olds come down with it and we've seen a complete turn around in a matter of hours, An older duck around two months may take a few days/weeks to be totally better.

To save you another trip make sure to get a syringe with a needle so you can get the fluids out of the bottle.
