Ducks “helping” with gardening

We have a deer fence...the deer stay out...the ducks plowed right through it! I thought about fencing my ducks...I hate that idea. I love to see my animals free range. Even my goats and pot belly pigs are free range during the day. Absolutely no trouble ever!! The ducks were/are such a joy to to me...I’d hate to lock them up. I really think I need to get over the loss of Little Lou, then, as you said, just get a few. Muscovies will be my choice. We loved to watch them in the pond! Then, with just a few, it won’t matter if we lose a few veggies here or there. Also, I’m milking goats right now, twice a day..it takes at least an hour a time. I make cheese and fudge and sell that. :). I didn’t know how to tell you guys about the ducks...sorry. :(
Well, if you decide for Muscovies, you would not have to worry about fences at all: They can fly…

@Duckfarmer1 - Forgot to say: My Ducks are pretty happy with the area i fenced in around our house. Even if i leave the gates open they rarely run out. Of course if they go exploring it is even more exciting for them, like doing something forbidden…
It’s something for me to think about for sure. I would definitely want it to encircle the pond...and that’s really big...talking big money. I’m not doing anything until my kids are weaned and piglets dropped and weaned...so, that should be around May or June? Would be a nice time for some again. If they don’t break my heart again. I will be soooo sure to only have one drake!! Not taking any chances with injuries!!

I hear you! - I would just order ducklings at Meyer Hatchery in Ohio, they ship and the 'lings arrive the next day due to close proximity. And then you can order exactly what you like to have: 30 ducks and five drakes, for example… 😜

Nope, not that many again!! I’m thinking more like 3 ducks, one drake? 4 ducks, one drake? Too many other critters on the farm now...you start a giant farm...and then you’ll see....I do miss my duckies:(

Four Ducks and one drake should work fine - if you have a nice drake and not such a serial rapist like Erpelchen… He got the first hose down of 2020 today! He almost strangled poor Maggie.

Oh no!! I just grabbed a few of my guys by the neck last winter and wanted to throw them...MyGuy...after he hurt Little Lou. Ducks mate constantly!! Worse than my other animals! It’s still wayyy toooo cold here to use a hose, and anyone would catch hypothermia!

So far it hasn't been too bad here, even with too many drakes, But Erpelchen, btw. his name means "Little Drake" in German but he is a really big boy, just oversteps any red line: He is rough to the girls, he doesn't stop even when the poor duck is about to die, he is the fence breaking expert, he bites the other drakes… He is like that bad guy walking through town with that "just call me chicken" face. Blanca Duck hisses at him whenever he want's "it".
It seems we are almost through with winter here :thumbsup The forecast predicts a brief frost for the upcoming weekend and then just some close calls, so i may be able to start planting (potatoes) at the end of the month.
