Hi there I have 8 chickens but we are getting a duck tomorrow form some who can't look after him anymore.
Can the duck live in the coop with the chickens? I have two coops one with a flat bottom. The chickens all sleep in the larger coop but lay their eggs in the smaller coop where I was going to house the duck. Any thanks.
Sorry I'm in the wrong part

From my experience, i have three Pekin Ducks and 19 chickens. The ducks have been around the chickens since both the ducks and chickens were a few days old and my ducks are mean to the chickens when they get near then during free ranging. I dont keep them all in the same coop.

I have 13 chickens and 8 muscovy ducks that share the same coop, yes the chickens do get a little bullied but nothing serious. And that only happens when they get in the ducks' way..or bother them. Other than that they are great together, but I would get your duck a friend..they do much better if they have another duck around for company. :) I hope this helps!

I have about 25 chickens living with 3 ducks. They get along fine as long as the ducks get to eat all they want. Ducks make a huge mess and eat and waste water. I would be free of all ducks if my daughter would give me the green light!

Thanks for the advice. The reason why we're getting him is cos his wife died and he is lonely and the lady thought it would be nice for him to have some company with chickens.
We will be getting him a new lady friend in the near future but just need to get used to a duckie.

Oh sad :( poor duckie! Yeah the chickens will give him a little company til you get in the swing of things...and can get him a new wife lol. ;) The only thing my ducks and geese get different than my chickens is a lil swimming pool to bath in. But I have had a few chickens take a dip when it's real hot out lol, they hop in walk around for a sec then hop out.

Do you know what kind of duck he is?

Yes, they can go together, but you do have to be careful with a drake and make sure he is not mating with your hens, as it can injure or even kill them since they are not built for being mated by a duck [drakes have penises, roosters do not, so drakes can cause internal injuries to a hen when mating. The drake can also grab the hen by the head too hard and cause injury] If the duck does mate them you will need to keep them separated to prevent injuries.

Thanks for the info. Donald has arrived and he's currently chasing the chickens around the garden. We wondered if he would try and mate with the chickens as he's running around after them showing them his wings.
