My duck coop
I have 17 ducks. 14 females. I used to have 21 females. When I had 21 female hens I would get 12-18 eggs a day. I have 14 females currently and I am only getting 1 egg a day! And today I got 0. I’ve been getting 1 egg since 12/24. It is winter time where I am, does this have a major impact on them? They have access to food all day. And free range all day. They are 1yr and 6 months old. But our chickens that are much older are giving us 5-8 eggs a day, granted there are 18 of them. The ducks have always outlaid the chickens. But now I’m not getting any eggs. What can I do to help them? Any ideas what’s going on? Khaki Campbell, Runner, Welsh Harlequin, Pekin

My guess would be the cold. @Miss Lydia @indianaducks @Pierre duck drake

Sounds like they are taking a winter break. And that is a good thing. Enjoy your chicken eggs for now. I am lucky to get 1 chicken egg a day right now and my ducks haven't laid since Oct. I have a couple new hens[chickens] laying now so I am at least not going to have to take the walk of shame like I had to do last year. lol
All layers need a break from laying to build back up their calcium levels and what a better time to do it than winter when days are short and it's cold.
Once days start getting longer your ducks will start laying again.

Sounds like they are having a winter break, mine are right now! Mine started right when the weather was below freezing and it was snowing. They will start laying again soon. So with ( most ) chickens, they lay all year, ducks they really pick when they want to lay. What breeds of ducks do you have? It can also depend on the breed, so with khaki cambells (like my breed) they ( are supposed to) lay all year.

As I said in original post I have mostly Khaki Campbell, but also some runners, welsh harlequin, and a Pekin. I’ve never heard that ducks take a winter break before. Before I got them and I was doing research it said they outlay chickens so if they take long breaks how do they lay more eggs than the chickens per year?

I think this is dependent on temperatures and daylight hours. My ducks have not laid an egg in month nor as I expecting any for months to go yet but it is cold and snowy here. Occasionally get 1 or 2 chicken eggs from a flock of 15.
Not sure how ducks could lay more eggs than chickens if they are in the same environment. Usually one egg each per day per bird.

My 2 Rouen girls (10 months old) haven’t laid since (Oct?) I just assumed winter break. I’m getting 2-4 chicken eggs a day (we have 4 hens-17 months old)
Of course after posting this yesterday I woke up to a New Year’s surprise and had a random duck egg today 🤦🏽‍♀️Wouldn’t have even found it if it weren’t raining (I was putting their food inside their house vs the run)
