Ducks attacked by dog

yay!

So sorry to hear about your duck, i hope she got better, i know its been over a year since this thread was posted but im in desperate need of advice, yesterday evening a pack of four dogs (they were collard so they belonged to someone) broke unto our paddock and mauled my brothers three hens and my four ducks. We free range them during the day but they busted the fence open. Only one of the hens is in really bad shape, we arent sure if she even made it through the night she had alot of broken bones and deep wounds, but one of the hens has badly broken legs and a broken wing, and the third has superficial wounds on her tail. The ducks, (my poor babies) are in dire straits, only one made it out with a nick on his shoulder, but his partner (theyre brothers but as they were alone for the first 2 years they formed a strong bond) is in bad shape, hes the lead drake and hes got terrible wounds on his back and was incredibly docile last night (which for him is unusual as hes usually very assertive and feisty) and kept laying down with his head out flat, i couldnt tell if he had any broken bones. My other ducks are adoptive brother and sister and are inseperable, the girl made it out with some nips on her bum and shoulder but her brother is not as well, he got bit badly on his back and has alot of broken bones although i cannot tell specifically where because he was in such bad shape last night. As of last night around 10 eceryonewas alive and had a warm bed of hay and access to fresh water but were sorely inexperienced and as im only a teenager and my parents wont take the birds to a vet, if anyone has any advice at all on what to do, it would be greatly appreciated. Weve so far only been able to put topical antibacterial ointment on their wounds but its people stuff, and my moms gone to get some more fowl specific medicine today. Any advice at all would be monsterously appreciated, in the meanwhile please send healing thoughts to Gladys, Debra and Winona, Merry and Pippin, and Lilly and Sam.

Ducks can make miraculous recovery, with good help.

Since a vet is out of the question, I will share a few things.

First - fix the security problem. Any who were not injured are still at risk. Please try to think in terms of what you can do, rather than what you cannot do on this.

The wounds need to be cleaned, and the feathers around them clipped back at least half an inch, so that you ca see what you are dealing with. Sometimes broken bones just need to be rested to heal. Sometimes they need to be set.

This site has some information that may be helpful with leg injuries - you may need to make a sling or slings to let the legs rest and the bones knit.

I will post more in a few minutes.

Some people medicine is fine for ducks - triple antibiotic ointment without painkiller, for example, as well as Epsom salt and many others.

The basic care ideas are to clean the duck or chicken, locate the wounds, clip and clean them, rinse with antimicrobial liquid like saline solution or Vetericyn, keep away from flies - repeat - keep the flies away they will lay eggs in the wound and complicate treatment and recovery.

In addition, electrolytes and vitamins in the water twice the first week or two, then once a week till they're healed - they need all the nutrition they can get to heal.

You may need to use oral antibiotics if the puncture wounds introduce bacteria to the bloodstream. It is important to try to prevent this by cleaning them up a.s.a.p. and continuing to rinse their wounds, and by boosting their immune system so that it can fight off infection.

I would consider using Epsom salt compresses for some of the wounds - it is magnesium sulfate. It is also a laxative, so I do not recommend just putting it into their bathwater.

Update on the ducks, Merry (my Magpie Duck) died at noon today, and Sammy (the pekin drake) died about 20 minutes later. Their wounds were just too deep, but miraculously the other drake (Pippin the Cayuga) has taken in my pekin hen Lily and the two are coping pretty well. Thank you for the advice :3
