Hi! I have a pair of Pekin Ducks that I got when they were 2 weeks old back in April. We ended up having a male and a female, which I was SO happy about. Recently male duck has discovered that he is in fact a boy. He's now on my female all the time even though she hasn't started laying yet.. He pulled out all the feathers on the top of her head. So now she has a big bald spot. Then I noticed yesterday that her eye looked funny. After looking at it closer I realized that there is puss either coming out of her eye or all around her eye. It's completely soaked about an inch the entire way around her eye. Her actual eye itself has bubbles in it. Did my male duck grab ahold of her eye instead of the top of her head? She's acting fine otherwise. Running around, eating, and swimming. Is there anything I can put on it or any medications I should give her? I have injectable Tylan that I use for my chickens when they're sick. These are my first two ducks and they have been completely healthy up until now so I really have no idea what to do. Help!

First thing to do is separate them. He's too much for her right now.

Then, antibiotics may be the thing to do, since the way you describe it, it's pretty far along. I would also rinse it in Vetericyn four or five times a day, or at least a mild saline solution. She needs to be away from him.

Longer term, more females may be the solution. Her life depends on you.

If you can get her to a vet, please do.

I will try to get her to the vet. It looks worse this morning. I'm not sure how it went to being fine to so gross in just a few days. Do you know if they sell vetericyn at tractor supply stores? I'm not sure where I would find it.

Call around to find it. Feed stores, pet stores, big box stores can carry it.

In the meantime make a saline solution - there is a recipe at WebMD website. She needs treatment now.

And yes, the vet would be good.

We just got back from the vet! He said her actual eye is not damaged, which is amazing news. He cleaned it off and saw that the cut is on her eyelid and in front of her eye. Because of this she can't blink and it's causing her eye to water and bubble. He gave me an ointment to put on her eye., an anti-inflammatory pill, and an antibiotic liquid medication. He said it may take a few weeks for her to heal completely and she needs to be separated from our male until then. So right now she's in the covered chicken run with a kiddie pool, water to drink, and food. Our male duck is standing right outside the run so he can be close to her.

Thank god we free range all the birds! This way she has somewhere safe to be but she can still be outside and see everyone!

Finally got some pictures. This is after the vet cleaned her up a bit and we got home. Please excuse her muddy bill.
