New England.. the cold part.
SO... I have a wood pile, and occasionally a duck climbs up in order to get into the garden (on the other side) if the gate is shut. Anyway, today the gate is open, but I have 6 of my 7 ducks IN the woodpile, snouting around, eating something(?), or i don't even know what. What on earth could they be doing? They've never ever done this before, and since they all fly like bricks, I worry about them falling off!

They are probably rooting around in there in the dirt, looking for bugs and other goodies. You may want to move the woodpile or try to keep the ducks from getting to it. They're probably pretty safe in there, but you don't want one to get caught or get hurt in the pile.

It was really strange. For about an hour, they swarmed all over it... now they're back in the pond. I looked all over, didn't see any cool bugs, or eggs, or anything that I could imagine them liking.. just poorly stacked wood... ducks are weird.

Thats cause they cleaned out all the spiders, beetles, and other crawlies in there! They are amazing at picking out all kinds of bugs. I realized too late that one of my 3 week old runners picked up and gobbled down a 2" wolf spider in the basement this weekend. They also followed us around the yard while we dug up the garden plot and devoured any and everything that looked buggish - and btw, they LOVE earthworms.
