I haven't really found anyone who can answer this for me. Is M^R+ a separate coloring gene in and of itself, or is ^R a dilution/restriction on M+?

I guess "dilution gene" isn't the right term, since it doesn't really dilute, it just restricts the amount of black in the typical M+ coat. For the lack of a better term, I'm just gonna call it a "restriction gene".

I wanted to try and figure it out myself through breeding, I have an M^R+ drake, but I only have M+ girls so it's kind of pointless unless I buy different-colored hens. Figured I should ask around before I spend too much time and money answering it myself. Does anybody know for sure?

M^R is a separate gene. You also don't want the "+" after it, because it's not a wildtype mallard gene, so it doesn't get the + like M+ does :)

In order of dominance, M^R is dominant to M+, and then of course m^d is recessive to both.
