ducks on gravel

i just ordered three male white and fawn runner ducklings! i bought them from Cackle Hatchery earlier today. it will take a while for them to get here.

i have a shed for them when they grow up (it only takes 60 days). it is on top of large smooth gravel and i'm a little worried about their feet. it hurts my feet at least.

then again, they only weigh 4 pounds and i'm 66 times their weight. there are no sharp edges on the rocks.

i might end up laying down hay around their shed, that way they can walk into the garden and back.

Is it pea gravel, little round stones the size of peas, that is what it sounds like. Lots of people use pea gravel in 5heir duck runs. The hay around the coop would deteriorate and make a wet mess when it rains

If it is really smooth gravel it should be fine, if not remove and use sand instead.

If they are using the shed for a coop youd put stuff down anyway ide imagine, so you can rake it out and keep it fresh. Weather its pine shavings or hay. Whatever you rake out and spread it around outside theyll love it

Hi, I have mine on combined gravel stone outside that doesn't seem to bother their feet. The gravel stones are neither rounded nor sharp. The best thing I did for their inside area ( a converted shed) was to put down an offcut of vinyl over the floor with woodchip and straw in third box. This seems to work as the vinyl is cushioned and not slippy but easy to clean out.

Thank you. Well I've only had it set up with ducks in it for a month so am slowly learning the pond dynamics. It's two preformed ponds with a pump in the bottom and homemade waterfall feature flowing from the top to the bottom. Most of the dirty water gets pumped to the top and settles in the bottom of that pond leaving clean water flowing to bottom pond. However, the pump impeller does get blocked frequently which involves me spending 15 minutes picking out the debris whilst the ducks are quacking at me to get a move on! This week I'm going to make a cage for the pump out of insect wire to see if it helps with the impeller blockage and I've ordered a heavy duty dirty water pump (£34) so that I can completely empty the ponds once every 10 days or so. As both the ponds are relatively small/shallow this shouldn't take too long. I'll update as to whether this is a success or not
