I keep 6 hens, a rooster, two Pekins, and two Mallards. A little while ago, one of the mallards began roosting with the chickens after returning from brooding on a clutch. She had abandoned the eggs, possibly because it was too cold for them. Now, our mallard drake has began roosting with her. What is happening?

Do you have Mallards or Rouens? ( they can be confused with Mallards a lot of the time ) They're learning what the chickens an do, which isn't really good. The Drake is probably just wanting to be by his friend.

I have the same with a muscovy and a chicken. The duck eggs were non fertilized because I didnt have a male, but i left her to sit. A hen decided to join her. They have actually been sitting together on non fertilized eggs well over a month now.

I would only seperate them if I wanted the eggs, but I am not interested in them hatching.

I do not think she abandoned the eggs. Animals can get confused and be forgetful of where they put their nest. You could have moved her back to her eggs a couple of times and she probably would have continued nesting on them. They often get confused and sit with another bird. I have also had ducks switch nests within the last few days of hatching. They traded eggs after sitting on them for weeks.
