ducks sleeping a lot in cold weather

I have noticed them sitting on their feet a lot too. They have been finding places to block out the wind- like our porch or next to the barn but they won't go into their house. They have been going in a little earlier but not much.

Mine are ready to go in before 4pm but until then they just hunker down out of the wind.

the temps here have been in the teens yesterday it snowed this is the ducks first winter. today was the first day the did not come to the house for there peas. I went out and gave them some. there feet are cold the keep sitting on there feet to keep them warm. I put out more straw in there pen and around the gate. they seem happy laying there by there water and food. I know if I was home I would be laying on the couch with a drink and potato chips. haha.

That's about all you can do they sit on their feet and legs to keep them warm. We could try and find some legging and woolie slippers for them. But their bodies are warm with the down underneath the feathers.

This is our fifth winter...we just got 9in of snow and the high today was 22. They come out of their house in the morning quacking at me like "we saw you in the house...we want our food and fresh water now! Spatula (drake and head duck) gives me stink-eye. My wife use to laugh at me because I would fluff their pine shavings in their house...The more you do for them the more they demand. I still enjoy the first snow fall...they look at me as I did it to mess with them. Maybe that is why they sleep all day...to mess with me...see we can nap all day, now our bed needs some attention, why don't ya get on that.

Poor ducks started stopping every foot or so while walking to sit on their feet. I am keeping them in the pen tomorrow with their water and food in the green house. Maybe they will go in a little tomorrow. Our current temp is 10. I don't know what the wind chill is. But they didn't even want to walk to their pen for dinner tonight. Maybe keeping them in the pen will keep them from getting to bad off. Gonna move the geese to their winter set up too. They refuse to go in over night, I can't imagine these temps are good for them. I am going to have to make them go in. They are sitting just as much as the ducks now. I don't blame them, this weather is just crazy.

The weather has been crazy cold these past couple days no matter where anyone lives! I'm already thinking of making some changes in my run. Bout slipped on frozen pop this morning! This is my first winter with ducks and go figure not normal temps. Good luck with their winter house
