Ducks VS Muscovies

What are the differences? Besides physical appearance that is. Are they as good layers as the standard mallard-derived breeds? Do they lay year around pausing only for molting or do they have laying seasons like a goose?

The lack of vocals probably stand out the most, mine were pretty good layers but the drought/extreme heat has brought it pretty much to a halt, i did get an egg today though lol Plus i let a few ducks sit nests so i have had babies .. Lilly is still committed to hers right now yet they are 7wks old, so she isn't laying period.

They aren't big layers overall but i don't know what other breeds are like that are dual purpose. I have mine mainly for bugs and so forth they forage all over and through the horses field cleaning up, if i get some eggs i am cool with that.. mine are not for meat, they are pretty hardy as far as duck breeds go and are of decent sizing making them less delicate than say a cute little call

They lay a fair amount of eggs but defiantly not nearly as much as runners or KCs. However, their personality is much more like a Goose then a ducks. Even when full growing my Scovy Drake would follow you around like a puppy. Plus these guys are some of the best duck broodies I've ever seen.

My ducks have not started laying yet, so I cannot help you much! I have two Muscovy ducklings, and they are both super sweet and gentle.

Question..not trying to hijack your thread sweety..What is different between a Muscovy and a Duck? Someone, asked me this question the other day and I couldn't answer them. Just curious.

Well from what I have read - they are more closely related to geese than ducks. They behave differently, they roost (ducks do not), lay a little differently, even look different. So although I know the differences - I like to read what actual owners have to say about their experience with them. Some ppl love them more than mallard-derived ducks and I am curious why. (just to know. Maybe I need some! Haha)

Their being quieter is very nice & they tend to be very friendly,too. I did notice a difference when I was growing up between our Muscovy pair & our ducks. The scovies were nicer & acted like the geese by not being so skittish around us so I have had more of an affection for Muscovy growing up because of that I suspect. That & I like the unique look they have. I'm a sucker for mohawks!
My Daisy tends to respond to my voice almost as well as my dogs, but I am guessing that any breed will listen with enough attention, I don't know. That might be the affinity toward them most people have,though. We tend to like animals that seem to appreciate us as much as we appreciate them.
Daisy just started laying eggs Saturday & so far she's been giving me one every day around midnight-1AM after I get home from work,but I read they're seasonal layers. She has been weird by only laying after I go in the room to let the dogs out & talk to her & give her some treats.
I had read they're great bug catchers so I was very psyched to get one as I have the occasional spider in the house, pincher bug or flies get in but so far Daisy would rather eat a goldfish cracker or dog food than a bug.

I'm sure with them staying outside they become real Muscovy & eat bugs, though.

Scovy Momma - I have noticed this two. My two scovy ducklings are very calm and gentle. Whereas the Chocolate Call duckling that is in there with them runs around being crazy when it's time to lock them up. The scovies just sit there and let me pick them up. Really love that. Are their eggs bigger that the average duck egg?

By the by got my 1st duck egg today!!! So eggcited!! Going to bake a cake or something. Anyone have a good recipe to use duck eggs in??

I have a male ans a female scovey, they are the SWEETEST over all.. I also have 4 pekin ducks... I love them too, but they aren't as sweet
