After more than a decade of dreaming, this March I got 12 ducks of a variety of different breeds. Until last week, they never left my property. I have 2.5 acres with woods by the road. Last week my neighbors were having their house painted and my ducks went down my fairly long driveway, crossed the road and hung out at their house with the painters. The neighbors fed them and put out a kiddie pool. Of course now it's their favorite spot and everyday multiple times a day they cross the road to go to the neighbors. I talked to the neighbors theyagreed to stop feeding and put the pool in my yard, but the ducks found their bird feeder. They then help me put up a temporary fence for my ducks, but I want them to be able to walk around freely and eat lots of bugs and enjoy seeing them out the window. how do I get my ducks to stay in my yard and not cross the road? My budget is like $25. I spent so much money getting them that I shouldn't have. Seriously distressed.

Welcome to BYC! I'd suggest you keep them in temporary fencing unless you can be outside with them, that way you can keep them home.

Ducks are creatures of habit and are also food motivated they will go where they can get a free meal and now even though the neighbors don't feed them any longer they still hope they might get a hand out if they go there. Fencing is the only way to keep them home or penned until you can supervise. Keep them up for a few weeks and see if that alters their behavior to wander. They not only run the risk of a predator getting them while wandering around but many a duck gets run over when crossing a road.

Sounds like your neighbors are pretty cool! That road is scary though. Lowe’s sells temp fencing, more than $25, but here’s what I use, linked below. Stakes are like $5 ea. I use trees when possible. But you can always move it later on.
Ducks can be expensive! I joke since I just sold 1/2 dozen of Ruby’s eggs for $5, I’m recouping my money spent on these guys! https://www.lowes.com/pd/Garden-Zon...foOJR8S6D8NYS7HR25sOQq7XR7pJ_WRRoC4jcQAvD_BwE

Did you have any success at keeping them in? Mine discovered road killed frogs after a rainy week when the frogs were migrating, now they're going down there every day to look for food. Their coop is 120 m from the road. They just go out the driveway because the woods is harder to walk. I'm wondering if a Texas gate would work to stop them.
