Ducks

Hi everyone, this is my first time. I have loved poultry all my life and have bred chickens, but ducks are my passion. I have bred several types of the years, Kayuga and crested being my favourites. At the moment I only have three beloved Muscovy girls, Ooby Dooby, Angie and Roxanne who are all very loved and very spoilt. They have been broody several times over the summer and I have tried to explain to them that there's no boyfriend because I dont like Muscovy drakes. I know they can't always breed other ducks, but can anyone suggest a possible breed that might be more compatable with muscovies.

I have muscovies and runners. Muscovies are a separate subtype of duck, more related to geese. If they breed with non muscovies their offspring will be infertile but will still lay eggs.

They're big ugly, stupid and hissy. I've had a few over the years, the girls are very sweet, the boys not.

The other reason I would like to breed them to anything other than a muscovy is that their ducklings are much more difficult to sex. Other breeds you can pick boys and girls by about six weeks, but because muscovies don't quack like other ducks it's much harder and I don't want to be stuck with a heap of muscovy drakes that no one wants.

You can only breed them with other muscovies if you want them to keep having ducklings. If you cross breed them with any other type of duck their hybrid babies will be infertile, but that's ok if you only want to eat the eggs.
