We have 2 border collie mixes. One has a very strong herding instinct and is always trying to herd the cats, unsuccessfully. She's also "adopted" one of the cats as her baby...when Anne was a kitten it wasn't uncommon to catch Hannah dragging her across the floor by her head. Knowing how she is, we have been very careful to keep the ducks and chicks away from her. It's not malicious at all, but I know Hannah could inadvertently kill one of the cheepers. Today we decided to introduce the dogs to the birds. Hannah immediately tried to grab Doctor by the head, good thing her collar was being held, just in case of something like this. Little duck raised himself up as big as he could and started yelling at the dog, who got escorted outside for awhile.
The other dog is a very worried gentle giant. With birds, kittens, ferrets, any animal she has ever been around. She usually will only nudge them very gently with her nose, or curl up next to them if allowed. It went well introducing her to the ducks. They made noise and she ran back and forth between them checking on them. She did get right up in their faces and Doc hated that, I wish this pic wasn't blurry, but here is what happened.
Snick just looked at Doc like what was that for...

Nips to the nose is how my 2 learned not to bother the ducks. If only they'd do it as adults to new dogs too!
