Dumb question alert -- can we put bleach in the dishwasher??

When we bought our latest dishwasher, the literature that came with it said not to use bleach, as it can ruin the seal around the door. I wouldn't risk it.

You mean as far as being safe for humans to later use said dishes and not be poisoned?

Yeah it's fine. Knew a lady who lived on an island for years and they dumped straight bleach into their (drinking and washing water) cisterns to keep them funky free with no problems. Besides, the heat tends to help take out the chlorine in water (why boiling water before putting it in a fish tank is one way to deal if you have no de-chlorinator) but if you just leave it sitting long enough it'll evap on it's own... just takes longer.

Overall should be fine... but as to how it might effect the metal of the rings... that I don't know.

yeah not using ANY of the rings...lol

most of them are coming clean fairly easy with just a Heavy Duty cycle, Sani rinse and a pre-wash and wash...

I buy old jars at garage sales and auctions all the time. If I have really stubborn stains I try two different solutions. Use vinegar and baking soda. If it is just a few jars you can fill them and let them sit. For several jars put the vinegar and baking soda in a sink or tub and let them soak. Another method that takes yellow stains etc out is fill jar with hot water and drop in a denture cleaning tablet. Let it soak for a few hours then rinse and run through the dishwasher cycle. (This works well for vases that are too narrow to get into to clean too).

Sorry, did not read all the responses but I use vinegar in my extra detergent cup and in the rinse aid compartment and have never had an issue for washing my jars for canning.
