DUMB question on Frizzle breeding??

I have one lone frizzle chick and several straight feather from the same clutch. What do I breed to get the frizzles? Those same straight feathered ones to the frizzle or a complete different straight feather? Sorry if this question is confusing. Don't know any other way of asking it.

You need to breed the frizzle to a straight feather, otherwise if you breed a frizzle x frizzle you may end up with a frazzle(brittle feathers). Now I believe if the straight feather birds you cross the frizzle with carry the frizzle gene then you should get a higher percentage of frizzle offspring.

There was a post about this not to long ago. I believe it was stated that the frizzle gene was a dominant trait. So, if they show being a frizzle they have just 1 copy of the gene. If they were frazzles they'd have 2 copies. The ones in your batch that do not show as being frizzle do not have the frizzle gene at all. Crossing those smooth feathers on each other you'll never get a frizzle. Crossing your frizzle to smooth will give you 50/50 frizzle/smooth birds.

You definitely cross straight to frizzle to get more frizzles, but I would get an unrelated bird since those guys all have the same daddy.

Hi,
We had a frizzle hen and straight roo.
We have 2 chicks from them both are looking smoothe.
What should we breed them with?
Will their offspring to a smooth be smooth?
and if we bred them to a frizzle they would have more frizzle chicks?

we also have a male smooth roo that is a brother to our frizzle hen. (she died) So can he throw frizzle chicks with a smooth hen??

You have to have a frizzle hen to mate with the standard feathered male to produce frizzle offspring. There are recessive modifiers of the frizzle gene. Some times a frizzled bird will look similar to a standard feathered bird because of the modifiers.

So Tim - does that mean the smooth-looking birds from a frizzle cross can actually throw more frizzles? That's what people seem to say, but I never really believed it.

There is something in Hutts Genetics of the Fowl about "Modified heterozygotes have less extreme frizzling in all parts of the body, and at maturity it may even be difficult to distinguish such birds from those not frizzled (Fig. 35)." (the section on Frizzling starts on p.107).

I've never seen that here. Either they are frizzled or they aren't and I only get frizzled chicks if one of the parents is 'obviously' frizzled.

I do not raise frizzles but am telling you what research says about frizzling. I will be going to the university in the next few weeks for more research and will attempt to find the studies on frizzle.

I think that some frizzle feathers would show on the body of the bird. I have a bird that has only frizzled tail hackles the rest of the body is standard feathered. I have crossed her and will hatch eggs from her this weekend and next weekend. I guess in three months from now I will see if it is a genetic trait or just an anomaly.

Most birds carry recessive modifiers of the frizzle gene. So if a bird only has one frizzle gene and enough modifiers then the bird will look similar to a standard bird. If I was working with frizzle and had a bird that had a few frizzle feathers, I would say the bird carried the frizzle gene.

I have also noticed in some of my birds that at a young age their feathers tend to curve but when they get older the curved feathers are molted and standard feathers take the curved feathers place. This curving is evident in the primary and secondary flight feathers (wing) feathers.

I asked a question the other day about my RIR that only looked slightly frizzled. Would this be considered the modified heterozygotes frizzling? Or is it just the curl feathers that will be replaced by straight ones after molt that Tim mentioned?
