Dumbest Things People Have Said About Your Chickens/Eggs/Meat - Part 2 : Chicken Boogaloo.

Responding to a post almost a year old about animals raising odd "children". When I was young my neighbor had a cat that had newborn kittens get run over. She was trying to bottle feed them but not much success. She only had two left when I found out. I suggested that we try to see if my dog which had just had puppies would take them. I took the two kittens and put them in a box with the puppies separate from the momma for about an hour. When I put them back with her she started nuzzling them back around her, including the kittens. One of the kittens never nursed but the other one lived about five years, two of which I think he thought he was a dog. He even tried to bark, made a noise as close to a bark as a cat could make. Definitely not a normal cat sound. He would even go squirrel hunting when I was training the pups, He was much better at climbing the tree than the pups. Sometimes even ran the squirrel out of the tree.

I hate sad stories about animals.

So glad I have this site where I can vent! I am still angry about this!

I have 6 rare breed ducks and for a few weeks now we've been getting 5 eggs a day (woohoo!) almost every day from our five beautiful females so I've been having lots of fun trying out new recipes. On Saturday I made Dutch Babies (also known as German pancakes) for the first time and they were just amazing so I was telling my mom about them and that she should make some too, especially since I had sent her home with a dozen duck eggs the previous week.

Mom: I don't eat eggs anymore, remember? I don't eat meat.
Me: What do you mean? Eggs aren't "meat" - nothing had to die, plus I've seen you eat stuff with eggs in it quite recently, like the pancakes I made last month that you said were "the best pancakes."
Mom: Well, I wasn't on my diet then.
Me: You had EGGY crepes at my farmers market a week ago! And you loved them!
Mom: Well, I went off my diet that day.
Me: But these are the healthiest, happiest eggs from the world's most spoiled ducks - you can't possibly have any issue with how they are raised or anything!
Mom: I don't eat anything from animals anymore and eggs come from animals. Plus I read online that eggs don't do anything for you nutritionally except give you high cholesterol. So I don't eat eggs anymore.

At that point, I was ready to start screaming and possibly throwing things because I was so angry. I have at least a dozen people who are practically begging me for some of my duck eggs because in addition to being freshly laid, super nutritious (as are all backyard eggs), people love the fact that these are eggs they can feel good about eating since they come from birds who live extremely happy, pampered lives. I have to ration out the duck eggs I gift people because I can't keep up with the demand! And my mom accepted my "gift" of precious duck eggs with a nary a word so that she could (over) hard boil them for my step father WHO DOESN'T EVEN LIKE DUCK EGGS!!!!!!!!!!!

Ughhhh that would irk me as well. Not only rude but misinformed!!

There is a bible verse this makes me think of....."don't cast your pearls before the swine....."

NOT calling your mother a swine there ;) just came to mind!

Here's a good one from my HUSBAND of all people today.

400

We have 25 chickens and he takes all our extra eggs to work and sells them. I was telling him we have five dozen he can take in and sell

Oh there were LOTS of worse names running through my mind at the time, trust me. In the future, I think that I'll "just happen to be running low on duck eggs right now, so sorry." I get a massage at my chiropractor every other week or so and there's a rotation there as to who gets the duck eggs each time because between my neighbor (who actually buys lettuce and cherry tomatoes specifically as duck treats because she loves my ducks so much!), my therapist, friends, my husband's foodie coworkers, etc, it's not like I don't have plenty of people who just love getting my ducks' eggs.

Gosh! And duck eggs are so good!

I know!!! And very hard to get, at least around here and where my mom lives. And these come from "the world's most spoiled ducks," according to my neighbor. (Judging from the amount of money I spent on them last month, she may have a point ...)

And then to find out that she just hard-boiled the lot, which I'm sure was done well past the point of merely being sulphuric, was just adding insult to injury. Each and every duck egg we use in our house is viewed with a rather embarrassing amount of awe and wonder and mindfulness - I mean, my ducks made those! Out of grain and bugs and soggy lettuce, they made something that will nourish and sustain me. I told you it was a bit embarrassing how much we treasure our ducks and their eggs. ;-)

And my mom just chucked them in a pot to use them up quickly.

Certainly her loss!! I love sharing the fruits of mine and my animals labor with people who appreciate it!! And understand how much time money and work went into them!
