That breaks my heart. No matter what we do to try and protect them, guess there's always something we cannot foresee.Unfortunately, it can get caught in their crop and kill them. I lost a Black Australorp, Aretha, when a piece of wood chip got stuck in her crop. Caused her to slowly starve to death.
That is so true, but doesn't stop us from missing those who pass.

Milo is so cute.I currently have 3 cats and 10 chickens. I had 3 cats including Claude, but he went missing. Several (like 6) neighborhood cats have vanished lately, and we believe it was coyotes that have been seen in the area. Claude was so cool. He was a rescue. Police had found a woman with over 100 cats outside, so they shot the adults and left the babies behind, figuring they wouldn't survive. Claude and his litter mates were 10 days old when the rescue people got them, and he was all but dead. Couldn't suckle, so they had to teach him how, then gave him to a surrogate mama cat. He was the runt of the litter. The vet then nursed them back to health, bottle feeding them. At 6 weeks they put them up for adoption and the minute I saw him, he was MINE! Grew up to be a real slugger, but a sweetie. I got him a baby brother, Milo, so he'd have a playmate. (The 3rd cat is old and totally over putting up with kittens.) When Claude vanished, Milo was very lonely, so now I've gotten a playmate for him, Nosey Rosie. They get along well, but she's not the same as Claude.

He was one of my favorite cats of all time. He's tiny here, but grew up to be a bruiser. Poor Milo. When they played, Claude would pound the sand out of him.
