thats so sad!! you should try to change the law. I bet you could if enough people agree with you. The limit in my area is 7, which is ok, because my parents would never let me have more then that anyway.

I live in new england, and it's supposed to be like 5 degrees out tonight. Should I bring my 2 chickens inside, or will they be ok out in teh cold?

The only possible reply at times like this is, "Thank you for your input". THE END. He's your in-law; nothing else you can do, but thank him and then ignore him.

I usually say something along the lines of "Huh, imagine that." or "Well that's something." Drives my hubby nuts that I don't correct him, but hey, he's old, set in his ways, and not raising chickens, so what's it hurting?

Eggs from the store are usually at least three weeks old when they get to the store, add on two weeks before you get them........ I think fresh eggs are good for a LITTLE longer than a week. Especially since they haven't been dunked in God-knows-what to sterilize them.......

Speaking of God-knows-what to sterilize them, you should have seen his face when I told him I'm not washing eggs until I'm ready to use them!

Where do you get an automatic timer for that price, Biddies? I'm assuming it's do-it-yourself?

My bad. I was thinking of my automatic waterer. However, no matter the cost, it's still a good investment for all the previously stated reasons. Besides, isn't it up to the person who own the check book to determine what's extravagant and what's worth the cost?

You're right; it *is* a stupid law. I just read that some town has determined that no household shall have more than 3 cats. Granted, no one wants to be the old cat lady with 101 cats all over the house, but what happened to the concept of "land of the free"? I personally feel that governments have become much too intrusive. If you can afford to feed and care for them, without violating anyone else's rights in the process, whose business is it how many pets you have.

My post was meant to be sarcasm directed at the busybody who said the automatic door was extravagant, and who also dared pronounce the chickens as too many pets. Sorry; others dictating how someone else should live is just a personal pet peeve.

My Town has a 6 hen limit, now Roosters. When they caught me with Roosters, they did not care that I have more than 6 hens. Weird laws and strange enforcement.

I had to keep a straight face when a farmer friend seen my Ameruacana hens blue egg for the first time. He stopped and looked at it and then he turned to me and asked "so what colour is it inside" So my casual reply was the same as any other egg....

maybe he has read the same book as me...."Green eggs and Ham"....lol

If your hens have gradually adjusted to the cold, they should be fine. The only concern is for chickens that have large combs that might get frostbite.

That's just the thing. The people that live there like having their whole lives dictated for them. They're certain that it keeps their property values high. And the thing about nutso laws is that they're only enforced when somebody decides to enforce them.

Two years ago a homeschool child went before the city council saying that since there are no laws on the books about chickens he would like to be sure that they are legal. The city council responded by passing a law banning them. As I said before, I'm glad I'm outside the city limits.

Here is a good one. Not directly chicken related but definitely bird related. Was out at a local Zoo and a little kid asked his dad, "What kind of bird is that? " Dad replies, "A penguin." The bird was a black and white stilt. It flew off to another end of the enclosure. Kid says, "Daddy, penguins don't fly." Dad replies, "Some of them do. That one just did." The guy was totally not joking. One of the Zoo keepers told me that actually happens a lot. Any black and white bird is automatically a penguin.
