Dumbest Things People Have Said About Your Chickens/Eggs/Meat

Exactly. And since I advertise my eggs as "vegetarian fed" I can't fault Eggland's Best for doing the same thing. Sounds like you have the same philosophy on chicken feeding that I do. Mine love to pick the chicken carcass, too.

I do own the roo that's my avatar. He's a lemon blue cuckoo Marans, and he's feather legged. And yes, he's a really big boy! He was given to me by Happy Mountain Farm (http://happymtnfarm.com/) when I put an ad in the Buy-Sell-Trade forum looking for a rooster. He's a very calm, non-aggressive boy so far. So that's a place to look if you want to find some blue genetics.

I am sorry if I offended, I just read this and wanted to caution about false advertising. It must have been a typo.

All this battery stuff just reminded me of the dumbest thing. It confused me when I was a kid even.

I had cousins that lived in a semi rural area. They had acres of land beside them though I think only the first horse paddock was theirs.

I remember being totally confused the first time we were wandering around down the shed and I discovered my uncle had three chooks with cut beaks hanging on the wall in 3 battery cages. Vaguely recall them having naked necks where they put them through the wire for the food too. It was horrid.

I remember even as a young kid going home and asking my mum why the poor things were caged like that when they had more room for chooks to wander than we did. Think her reply was something like because he was ignorant and lazy.

I hated going in the shed after that. It always disturbed me. In all my childhood years I never saw their hens on the ground.
That is the saddest thing I have ever heard about chickens...

Oh, you didn't offend at all. And I don't lie to anyone.

My point was meant in response to people who were unhappy that Eggland's Best and other national companies advertise as "naturally vegetarian fed" when hens are clearly not vegetarians and it's not a natural diet for them. Vegetarian fed means that the feed is vegetarian--no animal by-products. Actually, if it didn't freak people out, I'd use feed that has animal protein and fat in it. I think the hens would do better, and it would actually be more "natural." But it does freak people out, so I buy the expensive vegetarian feed, and my customers pay more for the eggs.

I try to let everyone know that hens are not vegetarians. I have actually had customers not want the eggs because my hens eat bugs. Blah.

Vegetarian fed means that there are no animal products in their diet at all, not just animal byproducts. Feed is everything that they are being fed. Your birds are not vegetarian fed since you give them meat scraps. There are actual legal meanings to the words. If Egglands best gave their birds any meat or fowl in addition to the dry ration and still advertised as 100% vegetarian fed, they'd be in hot water for false advertsing.

Vegetarian feed is the cheapest stuff on the market. Soy is used as the protein source. Purina and Nutrina layer are both vegetarian. The 100% vegetarian on the label is to distract people from the fact that fish meal provides better quality protein and omega 3s but is much more expensive than cheap soybean byproducts.

Hi I have a " dumb thing people have said".... Well, not dumb but possibly strange? I have only had chicks for 7 days ... But I have a feeling I will hear stranger things as time goes on... Two people on separate occasions have confessed to me that they are terrified of chickens! Is that weird? Like they had no interest in even looking through the lid of the brooder! They stood back like they were really really scary :)

We had a lady walk up our 250 ft drive who was supposedly selling grocery delivery service.

She kept going on even after I told her I wasn't interested. The chickens, who had been lounging under the awning, finally saw me and ran up to beg for a treat and she backed up real fast and got out to the road in a hurry. Chicken security worked very well.

I think they were scouting out places to rob since we are out in the country. She met up with a guy coming off the neighbor's place and they were standing out in front of our properties. I let the dog out at that point because they were acting very suspicious.

The regular UPS guy loves it when they come up to him. Some of the alternates won't step out of the truck.

Thank you for the good explanation!

No way is vegetarian feed the cheapest on the market. Vegetarian feed is $15.65 a bag, and feed with by-products in it is $11.34 a 50# bag.

here's a conversation....er, argument, I had with some one on another site:
Me: yeah, dogs love dog running until they are too old and ARE KILLED FOR NO REASON!!
also, the ASPCA has nothing to do with the vegan ads. I'm considering becoming vegetarian, because owning chickens really makes you think about how horrible it is to eat other animals. I wouldn't mind it if they at least were raised in sanitary conditions, not wire cadges filled with their own dung. ever heard of PUPPY MILLS, my friend? or FACTORY FARMING?

I respect people's personal decisions, but please do you research before you go around insulting groups that are trying to help people/animals.

Them: Dogs that run deer. We do not kill them when they get to old. We put hay in their pens and a warm lightbulb and then they slip away and we take them to a hunting dog cemetary behind our house and bury them. Also chickens don't care if they live in their own crap or not. Yes I am against puppy mills.

Me: you're an idiot if you think that chickens deserve less care and attention then any other animal. if your against puppy mills that leave puppys in cramped, hot crates filled with poop, then why aren't you against people doing that to chickens? they're both animals! They both can get sick and die, and they both have feelings. just wondering how you justify that.

Them:No offense I'm not saying I'm with it or against it. But really chickens don't mind. I say as long as an animal is fed and loved (which chickens are just dinner and usually will run away or attack you if you pet them) then its not cruelty. Cruelty. You'll know real cruelty when you see it yourself one day.
Me:No, they really do mind, and I would know, because I have 3 chickens who love being petted and are a lot more then just dinner to me. When one of my hens died, I spent the entire afternoon locked in my room crying. Chicken ARE ANIMALS TOO. you take care of your dogs, and I take care of my chickens. neither of them deserves to be locked up in a cage. Factory farmed chickens may be fed, just so they're fat enough to be a good meal, but they're certainly not loved.
Then I posted some really graphing pictures off factory farming and refused to reply to the rest of their posts.
This makes me sooooo mad!!! Stupidity is killing the world.
