Dumbest Things People Have Said About Your Chickens/Eggs/Meat

Don't worry almost every guy I know including my husband had more female friend then male.

Didn't this make me smile... I could probably only name a couple of male friends, but I think I know more about half the female population of the area than I wish to!

I get the eating jokes all the time. Thankfully my family are all really good at distinguishing pets from the rest. I couldn't send a pet off for slaughter at that sounds too 'disposable' to me. If the animal has given its all to me, the least I can do it provide it with a happy retirement. Besides, wouldn't an old dog be really stringy?

Now the difficult bit: explaining. I'm a vegan, so in my ideal world, no animal would have to go through the stress of the slaughterhouse, but I don't try to persuade anyone of my views, as they're personal (my OH eats meat). What I can try to explain is the vegan view on eggs. I believe a lot of vegans DO eat eggs from their own hens as they know that it is a 'by-product' and that their hens are kept with welfare in mind.
I don't eat eggs because I can't get around the fact I'm eating amniotic fluid. That's a big ew for me My other half enjoys them and I enjoy making him egg mayo sarnies. The people that buy them seem to come back for more, so it's probably just as well I don't eat them!
Now, you can lay on me and tell me how stupid I am for not eating eggs, but let me say this: people eat offal. I'm sure that's not everyone's cup of tea either!

I dont think its weird that you dont eat the eggs. If thats your belief than so be it. Eggs are just the extra that comes along with the chickens anyway lol. I do love eggs and soooo happy I just starting getting them a few days ago. But id own chickens even if laying eggs wasnt what chickens do. Chickens make great pets and I absolutely adore them. Even just yesterday one of my girls was walking really off i got nervous and told hubby( he jokes about eating them and such) his first response was "Are you gonna call someone?" I said "Who? Our only friends with chickens that would offer culling as advice?" He said "No! Call the Vet!" I guess he loves my chickens now too. (Oh and our chicken was fine btw. she was walking all crotched to the ground lol maybe she will lay today

)

As evidenced by the content of this thread, most of us are considered "weird" for having chickens by someone, so I doubt we'd be critical of your choices. In fact, a main part of why I'm here is to seek comraderie with others who can understand my thoughts about healthy food. So, although I'm not a vegan, I can understand and respect your decision to be one. More power to you.

I don't think you have to be vegan for that to get to you, my husband has the same eww factor with them and he is a pure meat eater.

You and my wife...yes we had one follow us into the kitchen to see what we were up to also. I was surprised at the number of people I talked to who were also raising their young chicks in the house while preparing a place outdoors for them. Then when I told one of my aunts about them, she said my great grandma kept them inside even after they were grown. Our biggest problem was dust, since my wife was just as fastidious as you about keeping the droppings and everything cleaned up. Now we have pet pullets that follow us around the yard.

Today I had posted something along the lines of my chicken thought it was ok to follow me into the kitchen today on FB. (She is about 12 wks now, they are not outside yet as the run is taking forever to finish. I let them roost on top of their brooder so they can stretch and not feel cramped.) Well my family member was like OMG I can't believe you let your chickens roam around your house, blah, blah, blah. They smell horrible, the ammonia is strong.

Ok first off I don't let them roam around the house because I don't want any of them to get hurt and find surprise little droppings. I never said they roam the house it's just my one girl likes to know where I am so she thought she'd follow me into the kitchen. lol I put her back. I clean the poop up everyday and scrub everything down a few times a week so it doesn't stink. You really only smell the pine. People come in and say, "What kind of birds are those? They look like chickens but chickens smell and your house doesn't stink." My dogs are usually more stinky then the chickens. I wasn't offend by her post but she took it has I was. I basically just didn't want people to think I let chickens poo all over my house. lol I guess some people think they know everything!

I'm finding a lot more people are against me owning chickens for eggs because they are just, I guess ignorant to the subject. All I know in the long run it's healthier and cheaper to have chickens make me eggs then to buy them from the store, especially when they are $4 for 18 and are NOT organic.

Plus add benefit of having little feathered friends and my children learning about chickens.

Yes...I had more than a few raised eyebrows from my family and friends when I hatched out 6 Silkies last winter and they stayed in the house till the weather cooperated in Spring. I was NOT going to let them freeze outside and I'm too fire fearful to hang a lamp for them in the coop. So they happily roamed the family room when I was home and lived in their brooder while I was at work. My house was never so clean since I mopped the floor every night after I put them to bed! My judgmental friends quickly changed their minds after visiting me and watching the chicks play and rip around the house (by this time everyone was wearing diapers - all the chicks, not the visitors...). Now they barely bat an eye when I mention that I bring the now grown Silkies into the house every so often for a break from outdoor life...what good are critters if we can't enjoy every aspect of them???

I had a guy come over to look at a few roosters i was wanting to sell or give away.   I took him over to the sell pen and grabbed the first rooster.  He then said "that is a female" i said no it is a male.  So, i put it back and grabbed then next rooster.  Again he said "that is a female". I again said " it is a male" . Then he said. They are all females. I then asked why he thought that and he said " The have no b@11$ hanging.  I could not help but to bust out laughing. I then explained a bit a chicken anatomy to him.
That was a few months ago, so the story is not word for word.
I gave him the web address to this site and hope he is a member now.

 

I gotta tell you though, I have a hen that I've accused of having those.

I haven't had a rooster for my flock since last year. There's a lady that comes by often and I've explained to her over and over that the eggs can't be fertile since there's no rooster yet every time I mention one of the hens going broody she asks, "Are you going to let her hatch the eggs?"

Maybe we just hang out with a weird bunch because, while a lot of our friends ask how our chickens are doing, none have made fun of us for having kept them in the house. A few were surprised, but they enjoyed our stories of the chickens' antics and our pictures of them perching on our arms and shoulders.

Well, I did say "most of us". Maybe you're friends are the exception. But, are you sure they don't think you're weird, but have learned that it's not wise to bite the hand that provides free, top quality home grown eggs?

Hmmm. This has me thinking ... to those who have made fun of my having chickens; "No eggs for you!!" (In my best Soup Nazi voice)
