Assumptions?? Can't be because *everybody* KNOWS you have to have a rooster to get eggs.

~AND~ Quote: When showing people chicks that I wasn't sure were male or female yet, they asked "Why don't you just, you know, look underneath them?".

Why, that would be .... obscene. Have they no respect for a chicken's privacy?
Lol obscene for sure.

I was talking to my grandma about how my chickens should start laying eggs and how I have a rooster. My grandma said,"Good thing you have a rooster, cause you need one to get eggs". I gave my grandma a weird look and replied, "Grandma, you don't need a rooster for eggs". I then had to explain why.

*talking to my friend *
Me - i bought 30 broilers last week
Him - how old are they?
Me - 6 weeks
Him - oh, so they wont lay eggs for another while?
Me - ............

my wife's and my chicken flock is worth more than some people's houses. our weekly care cost is more than some people make. i guess all these costs is why i'm not rich

If my uncle hadn't so graciously donated a coop, we would have poured $1500 into housing these feathered beasts.

Thanks for making me feel better. I spent over $6000 on my coop, tractor, and run, and don't regret a penny of it. Plus, organic feed ain't cheap!!! I had the hen house built solid with insulation, rain gutters with rain barrel, and a drawer under the roost for easy clean up. The run and bottom of the house are completely enclosed with 1/2 inch hardware cloth for security. The hen house could easily be converted into a garden shed and the run into a green house if I ever wanted to. I figure they've added a lot of value to my property. Martha would be proud of this "trailer trash".

Well, actually, I laugh at "free range" and "vegetarian" in the same advertisement. So when those free range hens happen upon some bugs in the grass, they just look at it and say to themselves " Oh no I can't eat that delicious bug, I'm supposed to be a vegetarian." Yeah right! The only real vegetarian birds are the poor girls looked in some barn or cage that doesn't see the light of day.

It just goes to show that the marketing people who write the advertisements don't have to know what they're talking about. They just need to make it sound good so the product SELLS.

We went to a bait shop for fishing bait and picked up a bunch of crickets for chickens while we were there. It was largely entertaining to watch them chase and devour them!
We turned off direct tv and now watch "chicken tv" in our back yard ;-)

From what I gather on this site, that's a very popular channel.

My apologies this is not about chickens. But it is the dumbest thing I have ever heard anyone say, today at a fabric counter a women says to her husband "Well, there are twelve feet in a yard and sixteen inches in a foot, so how much do we need?" To which the husband responds "I think there are only twelve inches in a foot." They both proceeded to look that up on their cell phones. Then argue with the girl cutting, was she sure there are only three feet in a yard? After getting their fabric cut the wife says to her husband "I think that girl was trying to rip us off" I was embarrassed for them.

Don't waste your empathy. Anyone that arrogant and stupid deserves to be embarrassed.

Completely dependent every minute? I assume you keep watch your chickens every minute they out free-ranging? And what of those that actually make their chickens free-range during the summer for 80-100% of their food, not paying attention to them except to close the coop at night? Chickens were meant to be low-maintenance. People really over-complicate chicken-raising. As long as you live in a relatively predator-free area with access to water, chickens easily can take care of themselves.
The OP posted a very helpful post to a Dependent of Parents that will not let them have chickens. I read the part about chickens relying on humans as meaning that they will not, in most places, live in the wild. Care is minimal but there still has to be care given and the person not allowed to have chickens can go provide that care at another persons place.

Kudos to the OP! That is a great idea!
