Dumbest Things People Have Said About Your Chickens/Eggs/Meat

I remember when I got my first flock 2 years ago: I was anxious for them to start laying, but so was everyone else and kept asking me about it. Now that I am growing my second flock, with the first still in production, maybe they won't think to bug me about it.

I've decided it's like everything else, though: getting married, having a baby, getting a new job. People just don't know what to talk about so it's "When's the big day?", even though you've told them a hundred times. Small minds, small imaginations.

Yeah, what's with that? Don't know why they think the answer will be different if they keep asking. I have two hens that are laying and two pullets that are due to start laying in August. The remark I hear a lot is "with 4 hens you must be getting a lot of eggs." So I have to explain that I only have two chickens are laying, and they are not production layers; one of the layers is 4 years old (she's a Silkie who will likely be going broody any time now), and my other layer is a 1 year old bantam Appenzeller, who is really only a fair layer. The two LF pullets will not be mature until August. They have been around the same size as my two bantams, until this week anyway. Maybe that's why people figure they are all laying - because they have all been of similar size until recently.
I didn't make it clear in my post, but the funny part is it's the same person!

Either that, or they have some form of ADHD or dementia ... they are interested in knowing but the answer you give, but it just goes flying out of their heads seconds after it's registered. LOL.

Yes, that *is* funny ... not sure if it's funny haha or funny peculiar, though. Maybe both. ;-) In my case, the people I was referring to are neighbours, and I introduced them all to the flock when I moved them into the coop/run. I pointed out the 2 month old pullets and told them that they would grow up to be large fowl, so much bigger than the bantam hens, and that they wouldn't be laying until August or so when they reached maturity. The comment came a couple of weeks later from one neighbour, after I had given his wife a half dozen eggs, sort of as a "get well after hip surgery" gift. We couldn't really spare any more than a half dozen because we only get 7-8 eggs a week total. And they are bantam sized. And we like our eggs. Then a couple of weeks later another neighbour said much the same thing after I had given his son a half dozen eggs in exchange for closing up the coop one night (we had tickets to a play in the city and wouldn't be home until long after dark). Both neighbours had been present for the initial intro. Weird. Maybe I gave them too much information to absorb all at once?

Sounds to me like they are hinting that some more free eggs would be nice. What these people don't realize is that we invest a lot of time and money to buy, feed and build housing for our poultry so we can have some REAL eggs. Folks think those eggs are free, when in actuality, that first egg can cost $500.00!

or with those of us with bigger coops more like around $800

That would suggest to me that they're not really listening to the answer. They're just asking to make conversation, as so many people do. Sort of like asking, "How are you?" People don't really want to know how you are, as evidenced by the fact that you could tell them you've just been given 10 minutes to live, "That's good" they respond to just about anything you say. They're just asking for lack of anything better to say.

Just respond with, "Same as last time; still don't expect eggs until August at the earliest".

lol It must be the disconnect since you've had eggs to share. :)

yup! Thankfully people are already offering to buy mine. I think I will charge coworkers from the get go. MIL and babysitter get freebies :)

I give first dozen for free to co workers to get them hooked on real eggs.Problem now is I have only four layers till Aug. then we should have 30 but 6 are banty. Family n friends usually only pay half the time since I don't like to charge them but they seal money in my truck or purse. Grr
