And, this is what we pay taxes for... ????????????????????????????? How does an ordinance against chickens turn into a legal right to bludgeon a bird to death. And since when is a chicken comparable to a skunk???????

My thought was it is even over the top for skunks. Wild animals are usually live trapped and relocated. It has been a federal law for at lest 30 years. If its wild and there isn't a hunting season you are not allowed to kill it. Badge or no badge.

Have you guys read this article yet? The things people do to get rid of chickens!

What really got me annoyed was that it was the family's pets. Really hope this raises support for a pro-chicken ordinance.
Total abuse of police power there. I know when its treat time with something yummy there's that sinking thought that you wouldn't want to pass out in the chicken coop, but hell, a chicken in the yard?? How is that really going to hurt anybody?? This really does sound like a slam dunk case to have that Chief's badge.

Do y'all remember the chicken incident a few years back when a loose (and lost) pet chicken prompted the police officer to get his fireman hunter friend with a cross bow to come out and dispatch it? Turns out the bird was just a few houses from where it was supposed to be...but the big stink was why wasn't Animal Control notified of the situation to take care of it? Nothing happened to either the officer or the fireman, btw.

Like with many things, it depends on where you are and who you are. A college student on spring break or some other trip wrung the neck of a goose at a casino in Las Vegas. He wound up doing time and paying a fine.

Promise them you won't keep your yard looking like the Clampets' live there, and that should ease their minds. I think that's what most people with the "there goes the neighborhood" attitude think of when they hear someone has chickens. In fact, show them Southern Living magazine articles about how backyard chickens have become "trendy", and some of the spectacular chicken coops from Williams-Sonoma. Maybe you'll convince them that your chickens are actually an improvement to the current state of the neighborhood.  :highfive:

Hey my last name is Clampit, seriously.

I was living in Las Vegas at the time. Three drunken college students went into the Flamingo's petting zoo and beheaded a 14 y.o. beloved guinea....and then proceeded to pretend it was a football, filming on their cell phones all the while. It was pretty flagrant. Two students got probation, fines and community service, I think. The main perpetrator was in his final stages of law school and had to go to a reform camp for like half a year (instead of jail), do beaucoup of community service, pay a hefty fine, take some remedial ethics courses and then he *might* be considered eligible to take the CA State Bar exam (having so miserably failed the law & order / ethical conduct / no arrest requirement) if upon completion the arrest was decided to be expunged from his record. I believe animal rights groups were in attendance for all his court hearings. Whether he is now a lawyer or not has quietly slipped below the news radar.

I was staying at the flamingo at the time. It was a duck and the person in charged of taking care of them was standing over it's body waiting for police. Security had the boys in custody. They were drunk as a skunk, could hardly stand up.

The two co-perps got two days in jail and a fine for taking a plea deal (misdemeanor cruelty to animals charge)

The main perp got 190 days boot camp and four years probation, after which the felony charges he got will be reduced to a misdemeanor and he can then pursue his dream of becoming an attorney.

Turk was a hooded guineafowl, 14 y.o., and a habitat favorite.
