Dumbest Things People Have Said About Your Chickens/Eggs/Meat

This is what I found on margarine:

Pass The Butter... Please.
This is interesting...
Margarine was originally manufactured to fatten turkeys. When it killed the turkeys, the people who had put all the money into the research wanted a payback so they put their heads together to figure out what to do with this product to get their money back.
It was a white substance with no food appeal so they added the yellow coloring and sold it to people to use in place of butter. How do you like it? They have come out with some clever new flavorings..
DO YOU KNOW.. The difference between margarine and butter?
Read on to the end...gets very interesting!
Both have the same amount of calories.
Butter is slightly higher in saturated fats at 8 grams; compared to 5 grams for margarine.
Eating margarine can increase heart disease in women by 53% over eating the same amount of butter, according to a recent Harvard Medical Study.
Eating butter increases the absorption of many other nutrients in other foods.
Butter has many nutritional benefits where margarine has a few and only because they are added!
Butter tastes much better than margarine and it can enhance the flavors of other foods.
Butter has been around for centuries where margarine has been around for less than 100 years .

And now, for Margarine..
Very High in Trans fatty acids.
Triples risk of coronary heart disease.
Increases total cholesterol and LDL (this is the bad cholesterol) and lowers HDL cholesterol, (the good cholesterol)
Increases the risk of cancers up to five times..
Lowers quality of breast milk.
Decreases immune response.
Decreases insulin response.
And here's the most disturbing fact.... HERE IS THE PART THAT IS VERY INTERESTING!
Margarine is but ONE MOLECULE away from being PLASTIC... and shares 27 ingredients with PAINT
These facts alone were enough to have me avoiding margarine for life and anything else that is hydrogenated (this means hydrogen is added, changing the molecular structure of the substance).
You can try this yourself:
Purchase a tub of margarine and leave it open in your garage or shaded area. Within a couple of days you will notice a couple of things:
* no flies, not even those pesky fruit flies will go near it (that should tell you something)
* it does not rot or smell differently because it has no nutritional value ; nothing will grow on it. Even those teeny weeny microorganisms will not a find a home to grow. Why? Because it is nearly plastic
. Would you melt your Tupperware and spread that on your toast?

Dr. Gourmet Says...

There was a time when nutritionists and dieticians recommended avoiding butter and using margarine because of the amount of saturated fat in butter. We know now that while too much saturated fat can promote heart disease, it is trans-fats that are far more of a problem. While these types of fats do occur in nature, they do only in small amounts. Unfortunately, for a long time many products that were produced were very high in trans-fats.
The reason for this is that when margarine and vegetable shortening are created by hydrogenating oils, trans-fats are created in the process. Those trans-fats were found in a wide variety of foods and have probably been a greater promoter of heart disease than has butter or other saturated fats.
These days more and more foods contain less and less trans-fats, including margarines. The "spreads" that are on the market now are lower fat versions of margarine and contain very little trans-fats. Smart Balance is a good example of this.
The email you received is another of those urban myths. Anytime you receive such silliness in your email box, you should be suspect. For the best answers I turn to snopes.com. Click through to this link for the research on your email: http://www.snopes.com/food/warnings/butter.asp

Sounds like you've been reading Michael Pollan's "In Defense of Food". Great book!

I'm confused, I've watched several documentaries on not only how fast food is processed, but on how many restaurants want extremely clean (and thus efficient) kitchens.

Margarine is just oil. It's not that unhealthy or gross. At worst, it's made from oil and skimmed milk so it's not an alternative to butter for the lactose intolerant. Sure you shouldn't pig out on it, but it's not that bad.

To each their own.

Since we stopped eating out ,as often or picking up drive thru food I have felt better. Let go of margarine years ago if it can sit out and not go rancid how good can it be for us? I stopped drinking sodas as well now we do have them since my DH takes one to work daily and my FNL drinks a root beer daily. I did have a sprite yesterday and it was soooo goood but I was bloated and felt awful the rest of the day and am not going to be too far from the restroom every time I indulge in something my stomach gets upset even with sweets if it is not home made I have issues anymore. As you said 7 Biddies to each his own. We were not built to eat chemicals or fake food, our systems just don't know what to do with them once ingested. All that being said ask me if I lost weight, not one single ounce, I feel better but I am not any thinner for it.

I am NOT saying this in defense of margarine, but you can leave butter out and it won't go bad either. I never put mine in the fridge. Bacon grease is the same way, you can get it to a hotter temp, so less is absorbed than with vegetable oil, so it really is not that bad, again in moderation. Point is you can leave that out for a LONG time even longer if you filter the bacon chucks out. I don't eat margarine, prefer butter since it has a better flavor and I use less.

As for chickens, I got the question today when I said my girls were panting in the heat, "Do chickens have tongues?", i bet a lot of people don't realize they do, since they don't come up and lick you, LOL!!! Not a stupid question, but cute funny one.

Actually, butter will go rancid. If you get butter home from the store, it's usually a pale yellow. If you leave it out for a while (few days at least) it darkens and will form a "ring" around the outside of darker color over lighter color in the middle. It will also change taste, although only slightly. I don't usually have this problem, even though I leave my butter out at room temp, but that's because I go through so much with all the baking I do.

I was cracking eggs for a cake, into a black cup so that i could pick out a shell if one fell in... My aunt by marriage (who is dirty minded) points to the suspension cords of the yolk and says "eww aren't you going to dig that out? Thats rooster sperm, you might as well be bobbing on the rooster if you put that in your cake!" i havent invited her to my house since.
Then there was this snooty couple that came to look at a horse trailer i was selling. Both claimed to have grown up on a farm. The girl goes "oh my gawwwddd like i didnt know chickens and horses could live on the same farm" and then giggled i said " ummm yea they funny that way"
People kill me with their ignorance of animals
If both sets of my grandparents where alive that would be news to them, they raised chickens for eggs and meat for their families, and horses where used to do work on the farm, and occasionally transportation.

The discoloration is from the butter oxidising. Keep oxygen away and it will last a month. I've been busy before and left it in the butter bell without using for that long without any issues. It doesn't last as long in warmer weather. I love my butter bell.

"Farms are so dirty, I would not eat anything that came from a place like that."

I try not to laugh when I hear people say that. Where then, does the meat you get at the store come from?
