Lol we do that too it started when we first got rabbits and chickens so the kids would remember they were eventually food. Rabbits were taco and fajita. Chicken are extra crispy, spicy, crispy, mama(nt going anywhere), spot, fred(that one came from my son lol) etc. and my kids collect the eggs most of the time
HA. i thought i was th eonly one. for years and years we have named all our male goat kids names like : t-bone, steak, makluba (an arabian rice and goat dish), leban (soured goat yougurt/cheese), my two meat chickens of undeterminate sex were shnitzel one and two (shnitzel in israel is chicken breast fried up)... we've had gizzard, and stew, and one goat kid was just plain : food. it grosses my kids out when i do that but so what...
btw, there are hens that do crow, and take on rooster behavior, when there is no rooster in the coop. they also seem to lay less. not sure what the hormonal changes are, not sure if it is just behavioral. however, some cichlid fish do that, and other animals also change sex if a male or female is needed, however most in that situation are not fertile, but just have the behavioral traits of the male... and nowadasy people do that too. a good friend of my duaghter's changed her sex to become male, but left her female bits intact in order to get pregnant, had the baby, and has gone on to continue sex change hormones. a bit wierd even for my liberal views especially since here language designates whether u are male or female, but whatever..........the point is that nature has this also.
