Hahaha, she is definitely a she, just seems to enjoy dragging it out.

Luna (BA) at 19.5 weeks. She is over 21 now [sigh] One day lol

Yeah, that's all girl. Just look at those hips! She might be hiding her eggs under those poofy feathers. Have you checked?

I had a funny conversation with one of my partners about how the first California White to get bright red comb/wattles/face was/wasn't a rooster. "So ... where do you think this egg came from? Hmmmm?" He kept putting her in the cockerel coop, and we kept finding eggs in the corner, which he insisted were laid by some other undefined bird who was sneaking in just to lay, and he wouldn't budge until the other California Whites caught up with the precocious one about a week later. Just to push the irony, once the hen in question was put in with the other layers she insisted on escaping the run every day to to lay her egg in the corner of the cockerel coop. They are creatures of habit.

Had the same conversation in reverse with the same person about a BA cockerel. We were standing outside and I noticed one of the sexed BA "pullets" was shimmering in the sunlight and getting pointy feathers in appropriate places. Me: "Ohhhh! It's a boy!" Him: "No. That's definitely a she." He wouldn't believe me until it crowed. Me: "Is that her egg song then?"

I usually take egg laying or crowing as definitive proof of gender.

I am going to school to be an RVT (registered vet tech) so you would think that most people wouldn't be bothered by chickens, but I swear I get the stupidest comments ever.

1.Well do the chickens need a rooster to lay and egg.
2.Eww so if the rooster mates the hen and I crack my egg will I get an baby chick inside... Umm NO, the hen has to sit on the eggs to make a chick
3. Why do you let your chicken scratch through the cow poop that is disgusting and I would never eat your eggs. They scratch through the poop to eat the undigested seed.
4. You're eggs are disgusting because they're double yolked and I would never eat those.

This is just some of the crap I hear. I am amazed the questions or comment that are made out of plain ignorance! If people only realized the eggs they bought in the store are about 4-6 weeks old and they're most susceptible to being bad because they're bleached which makes their shells more porous.
You know, I sympathise with the stupid remarks you get about your eggs. However, until recently, I lived in California. The eggs I bought at the supermarket were never four weeks old. They were a week at most. And they aren't bleached, either. They are usually washed with a disinfectant egg wash that does contain chlorine. I used some of the egg wash on my own eggs, too on occasion. I bought it at Nasco in Modesto. The chlorine sanitizes. It doesn't bleach, and I never noticed that it affected the porosity of my egg shells. Or the color either. As for the person that was upset about double yolked eggs, I have found double yolks in store bought eggs. Ask that person if he/she would throw those away, and if so, why.

She is getting close. BAs often start between 22 and 25 weeks at this time of the year.

"Only poor white trash own chickens."

Oh? Funny. If my uncle hadnt so graciously donated a coop, we would have poured $1500 into housing these feathered beasts.

"You'll get salmonella!"

Geez, i hope not as often as i clean.

Hubby yesterday, "youre gonna till the poop into the dirt right? Not just throw it onto the veggie garden?"
"Actually, i planned on rubbing it into the skins. Heard it absorbs better that way. Wth do you think, goober?"

Seriously where do people come up with this stuff? Poor white trash my rear end....we have easily sunk a couple of thousand into our coop and run and we're still going. BTW, I just love your comment back to your husband. I guess he doesn't know you don't use fresh poop on your garden in the first place. Way too "hot" that way - it needs to age a bit to not burn up the plants. Actually I'm dumping all my chicken's scooped poop into a compost area and I'm planning on allowing the chickens to "till" it into the ground for me so it will be just about perfect for planting this coming spring. And you are a lot more likely to acquire salmonella from store bought veggies and eggs than anything that comes out of your own backyard.

i love the poor white trash comment. i admit im not rich but at the same time, my wife's and my chicken flock is worth more than some people's houses. our weekly care cost is more than some people make. i guess all these costs is why im not rich

I think what they are saying is that washing the egg takes away the bloom on the surface of the shell. Without the bloom bacteria may more easily enter the egg, which is why it isn't necessarily good to wash hatching eggs as the are more prone to becoming infected this way. (Blood rings/ mushy chick disease). In refrigerated eggs I don't know if that is an issue. I've also found plenty double yolkers at the store and consider it a bonus. Love the yolk!

A our local country market, they sell brown eggs for about 75 cents more than white eggs. It says on the package "free range and fed a vegetarian diet," WHAT ELSE WOULD YOU FEED THEM?????? "Okay ma'am, I have got 83 sirloin steak, 97 cheese burgers, and some meatloaf, is that all for you today? $19563.00 at the next window please."

Chickens are omnivores, feeding them on a purely vegetarian diet is cruel, It is fine if they are kept on grass whee they can find insects but all indoor birds should be given mealworms or crickets as a supplement
