Dumbest Things People Have Said About Your Chickens/Eggs/Meat

You might not understand until you pay all the bills.
This is true, but the examples given - bringing home chicken nuggets and grass fed beef - are opposite ends of the spectrum, extremes. Even a store bought chicken if made into home-made chicken nuggets is awesome tasting without all the added "stuff" that comes from insta-food. It sounds like the poster is more in the area of educating family members as they do get talked into buying those products for home cooking.

I could be wrong. Me - I'm raising my chickens for eggs and meat.

I pay for the chickens, the quail, a good portion of the organic ingredients, and all I ask is for a ride to the market/feed store. Or I ask for them to pick it up for me while they are at the store. I also do chores that would otherwise be done by my brothers (for which they would be paid). Instead of asking for money, I ask for things that pertain to homesteading. I also paint blown out eggs and sell them, making my flock mostly sustainable.

So yeah, I do understand because I do pay "the bills". I care about my family's health and even if I wasn't paying for anything, they should care about their own health. Please don't belittle my efforts just because I'm young. I've understood expenses for years and don't need to be talked to as though I'm a child. I'm 21, thanks.

Someone seriously asked me how a rooster is supposed to fertilize the eggs if the hen is sitting on them all the time... He thought roosters fertilized eggs after they've been laid, and he thought that hens never leave the nest when they're broody...

Good for you! I know you care about them a lot, sometimes "parents just don't understand"

okay yes that shows my age.

I was brought up on boxed mac & cheese, so to me the one that come with the "velveeta" was actually a step up

Haha! I've never eaten the Velvetta one, to be honest. I have to avoid most processed foods, nowadays. I get violently ill whenever I eat them. Since my surgery, most foods I ate before are off-limits. Getting these good foods is also a bit self-serving, for that reason.

I actually did start off asking my family to buy normal ingredients from the grocery store. However, some of the preserving ingredients they use even on fresh chicken or turkey can make me sick. I worry because Mom has diabetes and Dad has high blood pressure and both have health issues in their family histories. I, personally, had my gallbladder removed in 2012 and can't eat loads of the preserved foods I used to. When I began raising the chickens myself last year (they were my sister's), I began to notice a difference in my health. I was more active, I was eating delicious eggs that I preferred to store bought eggs, and I began to research more about my health.

It's annoying when I'm told that I "don't understand" because I'm fairly young. I'm well aware of the bills and I have a job (and hobbies) that pay for all these things that I want. I think the reasoning behind wanting these things is pretty good, too.

Oh well. I'll just work on getting these things myself without parental help. Maybe the taste of awesomeness will change their tunes.

Maybe that person knows my broody cochin. She sat on the nest on a wood egg (seriously, I don't have a rooster and I do collect my eggs) for 7 weeks! I would take her out and put her near food/water but she would sulk, refuse to eat and run back to the nest! In desperation I got 2 ten hour old chicks from someone's incubator and put one under each wing of the hen in the middle of the night. You never SAW a happier hen in the morning!

There is humor in real life!

I asked why I have a rooster...cause I wanted one well she proceded with well I would eat those eggs they are fertilized and that is just gross. They will have blood and baby chicks in them. I wouldn't eat them. Well good cause I wasn't gonna give you any anyway! This is from a very educated woman...Book smart isn't as good as good old down on the farm knowledge!

I have a friend who's a little paranoid about chicks in eggs that are not from the store, she really does know that it's not likely and still buys eggs from me
but I sent her this video just to pull her chain a little:
