I politely informed them that it was bigger than a battery cage and waaay better than a 'cage free' hen in what amounts to a huge warehouse. My hens get outside time, play time, and I make sure no one is bullied. (oh yeah, mine have their beaks too)

What an excellent idea!  A large indoor cage for banties.

I used my puppy pen as a brooder for the large fowl chicks. 8 by 8 by 4 foot high dog run with horse mat flooring inside the house off the laundry room. I used ex-pens (portable dog pens) on the inside as the chain link wasn't chick proof and added shavings. I was looking at it the other day thinking if I ever got silkies that I may just use this room for them and not bother with a full time outdoor pen. Though the LF still think it's home.

Earlier this month at farm fair I was walking around the chicken tent minding my own business, showing a bantam to the little kids, when I saw someone point to one of the cages and say "look! Supper!" To his wife. I walked up to him, gave him a death glare, and he muttered an apology and walked away. He was about two feet taller than me with tattoos all over his arms. He was a stereotypical biker with a biker vest, a cigarette, (even though he's not allowed to smoke in the tent. ) a messy long beard, and sunglasses.
 Do not mess with me and my feathered friends. I was ready to sick Andy the roo on him. Which probably wouldn't have worked because Andy is the friendliest roo ever hatched!

so i had my silkie out and someone said "awww what a cute puppy!"

AAAARGHHHH!

Scientists recently concluded that most, if not all, dinosaurs had feathers in strips, sort of like the modern feather tract on a biddy.

I have wondered if we went back and saw Tyrannosaurus Rex if we would discover a very, very, large Silkie.

I bet you wouldn't have walked up to that and said, "Aw! How cute!!"

I had a bunch of people over one day for a potluck, and I had given my chickens some cream cheese as a snack, and some lady asked in horror "Oh my god! Are those things rabid?!"

I had also told my aunt about my EE and her eggs and asked if she had diseases because the eggs were blue.

I hope not! I know how fast biddies are when you move a potted plant and they discover the newly exposed insects, worms, snails, grubs, or slugs.

My Dominiques are bug Hoovers - they caught *all* of the cockroaches that had been hiding under the dwarf fruit tree pot.

One of my "tricks" to get iffy dogs used to me or help them relax was to read to them. That meant textbooks, journals, etc. While interesting to read to myself, they were boring to read out loud.
I like the idea of reading to animals, it seems to have a calming effect and you sorta hold their attention (while chucking treats to them) and have some nice bonding time.

I don't have my setup yet, but I want to wire Tucson's 24/7 classical station out in the run. There are less than 50 classical stations left in the country that broadcast non-stop. Differerent companies make outdoor, weather-resistant speakers to withstand the elements. I also read years back that chickens also like NPR Radio...what a hoot! I miss those Paul Harvey short stories he read years back...."Now you know the rest of the story." I used to sit out in my 71 Roadrunner during lunch hour to listen to those.

I definetly plan on sitting out in the run reading to my little buddies, but, being a musician, the music will be flowing out there non-stop (at a very, very low volume, of course). Our local station is excellent, originating out of the University of Arizona for almost 30 years, and I do support it. It should be a nice distraction since I live close to the Air Force Base, Pima Air Museum, and the Airport...jets and planes all day and night long. All I need is a disco ball to hang out in the run and let them jam for a bit....LOL!

I've got plenty of books ranging from just about every cookbook on Food Network, to quisines from different parts of Italy and Greece, to boring electronics manuals for repairing vintage gear, and lot's of Dinosaur stuff and biographies of famous pianists like Van Cliburn, Glenn Gould, Vladimir Horowitz, . They can listen while I re-educate myself and tone my lecturing/teaching skills.--BB

Well, the biddies might like the disco ball - they like to peck at shiny things. I miss Paul Harvey, too.
