Source please?

You are Southern? My ancestors are from the North.

cencus books for the time periods in question. i have one somewhere that lists the number of "freed black men and freed black women" as well as the number of slaves. if my memory servse me correctly(which it may not) the number of slaves in Chicago was about 1000 more than in Nashville in the earlier 1800's

Again that is incorrect

While I don't know if it's 100% correct, it appears that the total number people in the country at that time who owned slaves was 1.4%. The population in 1850 was 23,191,876. So if those numbers are true, there were approx 324,686 slave owners (probably not the exact number, 1.4% is very vague).

It's a small number compared to the totalpopulation, but it's still a lot.

I didn't mean to imply ronott1's ancestors had slaves, which is statistically false, I just stated that a lot of people did.

As a person with celiac disease who can't have gluten and spent 3.5 YEARS in the hospital every other week for a week vomiting violently, I have to be hyper aware of gluten, hidden gluten, cross contamination etc. It's a very serious debilitating disease.

All commercial chicken feed contains gluten. It is making me very sick again. Gluten is in wheat, barley & rye, which is in absolutely EVERYTHING!

I had to become a food nazi. Most gluten-free stuff sucks beyond belief to eat and is also insanely expensive. It's taken me 2 years to figure out how to properly cook gluten-free. I'm a foodie however, and very critical of everything I do.

Celiac disease is a real, and serious, problem. Food allergies to specific grains (not the gluten protein) are also serious problems.

My husband is allergic to corn products. Fortunately, the chickens seem to break down the protein in the corn enough that the amino acid sequence that triggers his allergy doesn't come through in their eggs, but I have nothing but compassion for you.

Do you want a recipe for injera? I have one that the only grain in it is teff.

My cousin came over a few nights ago, she has a gluten allergy and accidently ate something that wasn't gluten free, she was thowing up for two days.

There is a serious difference between someone with celiac disease or a food allergy and the histrionic folks who follow every food fad.

I have a very dear friend. I love her to death. But over the years I have sometimes just had to tune her out. When she visits, it can be difficult. Once she couldn't eat at my house because even though I fixed her vegetarian food, it wasn't macrobiotic. Then she was eating meat, but only organic meat. Then it was a heavy grain vegan diet, then a caveman diet, and now gluten free. At one point she allegedly wouldn't eat sugar - but poured on the honey. Then she wouldn't eat honey or sugar - but ate black molasses. After that she would eat only fructose, and now I think she is back to honey. At one point she ate no meat, and gorged on soy and then later she wouldn't eat soy because it allegedly causes serious health problems.

I love her dearly. But I just have to let my mind go to my happy place when she talks about her latest dietary discovery because otherwise we wind up in an argument.

True, my sister is celiac and it is less common than today's diets would seem to want people to think. But as I understand it gluten is an indigestible protein that has been rising in concentration as we have been breeding wheat and genetically modifying wheat to be more productive. I believe the concentration of gluten in modern wheat is 10x that of the heirloom or ancient grain versions... Not sure what my point is

Gluten actually is considered digestible, although there are a few protein moieties within it that are not. For most people this is not an issue.
