Dumbest Things People Have Said About Your Chickens/Eggs/Meat

Not poisonous. some folks use it to worm their flocks. Not sure if it is effective. I have more than enough garlic. Never have to worry about the girls eating it all up. I let some of my garlic scapes mature every year. The little bulbils fall to the ground, and start new plants. It grows like a weed in my garden, and if it's in my way when I plant crops the next season, I just move it. Bet I don't have any nematodes!!!

Gluten is in wheat, barley & rye, which is in absolutely EVERYTHING!

Oats too? I've tried researching this on the net, but I keep getting conflicting answers. The farm I sell my eggs to needs them to be on a gluten minimal/free diet because they have several clients with celiac disease. I am currently feeding a fermented COB (corn/scratch, oats, barley) with fishmeal, but I need to find some other grains that I can buy in bulk for this.

I'm about to plant garlic. Will they dig it up? I thought it was poisonous to hens.

No garlic is not poisonous and yest they will dig it up. I plant mine and cover it with hay/straw. They scratch and eat the tops.

Once I had some pepper plants in my wagon and left them where they could get to them. When I turned to get them to plant they were gone. Those buggers ate them before I could get them in the ground.

When I first got chickens and they tore into my tomatoes I thought, "well they can have the ones down low, I'll get the ones on top". Imagine my shock to watch chickens bouncing up and down eating the ones at the top? Did you know chickens can jump?

If they can find a way in they will.

My sister is celiac and eats a number of grains ( or grain like seeds) safely. Quinoa, amaranth, spelt, corn, oats, rice....

I have and it takes some work. Still those buggers find a way in. It's a surprise I got any garlic this year. EE's are very good at flying over fences. I'm working on fatter EE's so they can get lift off.

Don't think it will work unless they are way out of shape. I have a 15 foot embankment just behind the house. All my chickens but the rooster fly up there without a problem. The rooster flies 2/3 the way to an easier slope and runs the rest of the way.

He is the heaviest bird of the flock. The next heaviest is a Silver-lLaced Wyandotte and she needs a little longer run at takeoff and fly's closer to the ground but she fly's up and makes the bank just fine.

My hens always go uphill when they are free ranging. And if they are startled or the dogs from across the hill comes rabbit hunting a little too close they just fly downhill back to the house. And they can fly quite a ways without any trouble. Flying sharp corners rolled to their sides as they go around trees and going around the corner of the house back into the fenced front yard.

I think that if the city birds had more practice at flying they would be able to fly like that too.

Yes i just found the smileies.

I've made it to the end! FINALLY.

As a newbie chicken wrangler I'm full of dumb questions all the time. I think I post weekly questions about pests or diseases.

I think I'm backwards, though. Usually when I get questions, I'm the dumb one. Most often I get "So why chickens? For eggs?" And I just stare with my mouth open because I can't bring myself to admit how squeamish I am about eating eggs from my yard. It's not about being dirty, it's just... something I've never done before. I'm desperate for those first eggs, but I don't totally know what I'll do with them.

I have been surprised by how much fun they are. I suffer from depression and it's hard to get going most days, until I got chickens. Chicken TV is my favorite. I love their weird little personalities and quirks. And I love that now I'm outdoors with the kids, who also love the chickens. My 5 yo saw a picture of a silkie yesterday and said "Wait a minute... Let me see that chicken again." So she's doing better than some folks out there. ;)

Back to nature is the best remedy for mental issues. My son's best buddy has ptsd from this middle east thing and the best thing for him is to go out and watch wildlife, quiet, peaceful, no one shooting at him. Better than all the drugs he was on. And, in the country, when he has nightmares/flashbacks he can stroll outside and hear the creek, listen to the owls--brings him back to center.

I'm waiting on my first duck eggs... I'm a bit weirded out by what I will do with them, the chickens eggs though, yum, no problem there so much tastier than store bought.
Animals and nature are excellent remedies for what ails the mind. Try gardening, that sure brings tranquility, that's my favourite mental medicine.

Im not in the city thank the lord. I have some fat or very heavy C. Rocks. I also have some heavy B. Rocks that can't get to high off the ground and never get out of the yard that's surrounded by a 4' high fence. My thought is to cross them with the Amer roo and the Auracana roo. I'd still get colored eggs after the second generation and birds that can't fly over the fence.

I do like the pure birds but have to choose, so I stick with the EE's.

I like the EE's too. I also like the flying. It get them away from a lot of the predators here. I'm sure if i lived in a more agricultural area i wouldn't want them flying as much. But here the nearest house is downhill and a quarter mile through the timber. So no worryies about the chickens bothering the neighbors.
